Hello, all!

I'm new to this section of Lit, and I'm feeling a little wide-eyed as I take a look around.

Writing poetry is not a strength, but it's something I'd like to pursue, as a challenge and as a way to keep my writing sharp.

I recently submitted my first poem, which was quite nerve-wracking! I know a bit about how it goes when one posts a story, but not a poem. After a day or so, my poem has 80-something views and 2 votes, one was a 5 and one was probably a 1, as my score is now a 3.00. (Math is also not a strength!)

Is this typical? Do poems get a lot of reads/votes, similar or less than stories do? I'm happy to hear from any of you, and I appreciate, in advance, your help and guidance.

I'm looking forward to getting to know the poetry side of things, I'm always so amazed at the poet's craft and vision.

welcome :)

for a recent conversation on the topic, most important is to take stock of the comments as they lead the way to improvement and help to give you perspective on what you are writing. there are quite brilliant critics here and they take the time and effort to comment.

try to comment on other poems to help yourself grow as a writer in poetry, have fun, interact play in threads and don't take anything too personally, especially if its about your writing.

as to anything else, hopefully more welcomes can come in soon.

Greetings.

Pomes get less reads than Storees. It is the sad reality no matter what writing site you attend. I actually pay surfers to come in here and read mine. 25¢ for rating and 75¢ for commenting.

That reminds me ...... have send $57 in PayPal to twelveoone.

Welcome to the PoBo.

Directions:

1) Hang around, read poetry, and think about what you're reading.
2) Leave comments. They are for your benefit as much as the other poet's.
3) Consider what other people think of what you've just read.
4) Use threads like writing live and all of a sudden passion suddenly to write horrible poems that should never have been written.
5) If you have trouble writing (like me), consider using the 30 poems in 30 days challenge as an incentive.
6) When your mind is overflowing with thoughts of what poetry is and what a poem should be like, hit full stop and write a poem.

Repeat steps 1-6 for about three months. If you feel ready, select one poem and ask for feedback. Consider the feedback. It might be harsh; thank others for it nonetheless. Make a plan for improving the poem, then act according to the plan. Maybe submit the poem. Maybe not. Ask yourself why you're even doing it, and how the readers will react.

Answering your question: poems get a lot less readers. A poem with five comments and a couple favorites can be said to be a successful poem, given the average. If no one is leaving comments, it is because they don't feel like leaving comments. Which is feedback in itself. Ask yourself why, then act on it.

Thanks for your advice, everyone! I'm looking forward to exploring more here. I'll think about posting a poem here for some feedback.
