Black Noir

I just received an anthology of black noir. Its as cruel and feral as I love. The first story is split between prison fun and existence in the ghetto. I suspect I have a black heart.

The sissy white boys at LIT cant handle the honesty of the hood.

Speak for yourself, I've been told I can pull off a "poor black child" pretty well.

Why would you want to have a 'black heart' anyway?

This is a story from Les Back's study of inter-racial friendships (New Ethnicities and Urban Culture). He wrote about one white boy who was pals with a group of black lads. Black men were in lots of ways thought of as cool: the music, the machismo. The white boy said one day: "I wish I was black." The black lads just said very sharply: "No you don't."

I once had a black penis. But I suspect that's not the avenue this thread is going down is it?

LOL, no, dahlink. Come and show it off in Naked Party if you like.

(No pix! We don't insist on pix, whatever anyone tells you.)

How old is that story? Because I doubt its accuracy these days. Racism will always exist ion pockets of ignorance, but the black youth of today has no clue whatsoever what true racial hardship is, however they are told they do by ignorant "crusaders" like Sharpton and Jackson who do far more harm then a good for racial tensions.

But I think we had this discussion before Miss Smith

And what I know is I was born in the hood amongst "the blacks" and you my dear are a kept Milf spending a rich man's money so please don't play race card with me on these boards.

Blacks aren't cool, and the kid is right

Yes it is an old story. Still, you don't have to be mean to me, do you? Unless of course it hit a nerve.

There is no hierarchy of prejudice. People who are from a poor background, or an ethnic minority background, or other areas of hardship all suffer. I don't know why JBJ wants to claim blackness as part of his suffering. I am asking. If you want to claim it too, then why? Your own difficulties were tough enough, you don't have to say 'I was just like someone black' to make your problems authentic, do you?

Two black noir novels arrived in the mail today: BLIND MAN WITH A PISTOL and RUN MAN RUN, both by Chester Himes.

Critics hate both so I expect theyre worth the candle.

I was right. I read Chapter ONE of each novel, and theyre superb. Critics and blacks hate the books because the prose is raw and the action is violent depravity. The critics are delicate and the scenes are stunning. My kind of chaos and mayhem. Plus Himes used NIGGER a lot. I feel faint, and better lie down.

Read more chapters from the Himes' books, and theyre better than I guessed. Excellent writing the critics hate.

Ordered 3 more Himes novels, to fill the gaps in my Himes collection. THE CRAZY KILL I haven't read. Read the others.

After reading several chapters from each Himes novel I hafta say critics are fulla shit about the quality of the prose. I imagine critics dislike Himes contempt for faggots and his ridicule of low-class blacks, while ignoring his sour attitude about alcoholic whites, and whites in general.

In BLIND MAN WITH A PISTOL a white homosexual picks up a black sissy (prostitute) and gets his throat cut.

In RUN MAN RUN an alcoholic, psychotic white cop murders two blacks and seriously wounds a 3rd. The cop then investigates the murders.

Finished BLIND MAN WITH A PISTOL by Chester Himes. I now know why critics hate it: Its a string of unresolved homicide investigations. Its too IRL. Its a great read but nothing is resolved.

Next up is CRAZY KILL by Chester Himes. Reviews say its a nasty vicious murder well detailed.

Ordered 4 more black noir.

Finished reading RUN MAN RUN by Chester Himes.

OMG what a sucky ending. It was a primo read till the end when Himes lost his mind.

Reminds me of THE BIG GAME, score tied, with a second left on the clock, inches from a goal, a receiver is open in the end zone, the line is holding back the defense like Hoover Dam holds back water, and the QB drops the ball and steps on his dick.

Its THAT bad.

I did, however, salvage a great set of hubcaps for a LW story. Its the Queen of KICK HIM WHEN HE'S DOWN.

I truly have no idea why Lovecraft suddenly decided to launch this personal attack on me. It’s a shame, and I think he may have been sorry afterwards, since he never came back on this thread to pick up the argument some more. Of course, he is from a background where people do not say ‘sorry’, cuz that just would show they are weak and ripe for taking down. That’s a shame too. I admire his writing, and enjoyed editing his books. I know he appreciated the editing I did for him and it’s a pity that after this cruel set of jibes, I will not of course be willing to do so any more.

I stayed off the board a while because this comment hurt me.

Not the one about being a kept MILF. If only! LOL. If only it were possible for me to be kept properly in due proportion to the amount of work I do. If I talk about that here, it’s because I know there are other moms who come on here, although I hope none of them feel they are ‘kept’ because they spend time and energy taking care of children – the most valuable work in the world. Well, I not only care for my Fella and our daughter, but even for his parents and friends and others in his life. He can’t afford my just dues: my body weight in diamonds and vintage champagne, although he has recently stepped up his act to get me a few of the things I deserve in life.

Mostly of course, I get them myself, because I not only do 90% of the domestic labour around here, I also do a paid job.

Lovecraft accused me of being a ‘kept MILF’ and ‘playing the race card’ on the same day that my union was taking action against casualised labour. I contributed to their campaign with an account of some of the things which I suffer from because my work is done through casual contracts, and I can never be sure from one year to the next whether I will have a salary at all. Did I get into that situation because I am a ‘kept MILF’, ie a woman, ie, I do spend time at home putting effort and energy into Piglet? I don’t think so. I think it was because people think like Lovecraft does, they just think of me as ‘brown’.

I came on this thread and posted something out of my work, as an academic in race studies. I didn’t come on and say to JBJ ‘you’re wrong, I think that because I have a brown heart’ – or more appropriate to this board perhaps, ‘a brown bottom’;). I was hoping to engage JBJ in a serious debate instead of the silly ones he tries to provoke by being rude to people, cuz he is intelligent and I love to debate with him if he will be serious. Instead I got Lovecraft accusing me of ‘playing the race card’ and suddenly I felt like I was just brown, not a proper person who engages in debates out of their intellectual work, just someone who is always thought of as being brown.

I am not Miss Smith. I am Dr. Smith. Wherever I work, I have to remind people of this. Often in jobs where I had to have a PhD to go and work there. Here is one of the scenarios I had to face in one institution:
Pompous manager: “Well, Naoko, do you really think you could teach quantitative methods?”
Dr. Smith: “Uh, but I’m already teaching them.”
Then they decided not to redeploy me to that job, the reason given being that my research was not sufficiently up to scratch, even though I was already in a research and teaching post, and the job advert stated that it would be an advantage if you were doing research in race and ethnicity.

I don’t always mind being thought of in terms of my ethnicity, of course. The right kind of man can make me feel like a cross between a geisha and a houri and I will love it. But Lovecraft is too young to be the right kind of man for that. Often I prefer to say I am an ex-rugby player with mommy fat, in hopes that I will be allowed to be witty and say intelligent things about people’s stories and invited to edit and stuff, instead of just bringing in the tray of snacks in an elegant and silently sexy manner .

Race is like the poster child in the United States. The Civil Rights movement brought it to the forefront of American politics, and other areas of life where people suffer got ignored. I think class in particular gets little attention in the States, where supposedly there is opportunity for anyone. It can be hard to get it recognised that making good from a poor background, whether white or black, is a tough struggle. I feel sad to see people trying to figure that out by having a go at black and minority ethnic communities. (JBJ does not do that, of course, he is way too smart. They made him suffer at college cuz he was so smart the Perfessers kicked his ass while pretending to encourage his intelligence.)

I still feel a bit ‘brown’ on the board now, but I will get over it. No no, dahlinks, just the one tissue will do. I am used to being made to feel ‘brown’.

Serious! I resent that! and demand satisfaction, ma'am. If you want serious don't come to the debate dressed as a clown.

I'm the least racist soul on LIT yet insist on my right to want what I want, openly, without guilt. Read some Chester Himes and get back with me.

CEMETERY ROAD by Gar Anthony Haywood arrived in the mail. Chapters 1 and 2 don't impress me. Too viscous. Almost constipated. The bruthas let a child perish in a house fire, and 25 years later their PTSD makes them the real victims. WHASSMUHCHEK!

I'LL BE DOGGONE by Paula L. Woods. Black female detective adopts an orphan puppy from a murder scene. Awwwww. Next.

If you do what I and numerous other people on this forum do -- which is to take the kid's ass-talking as only so much ignorant blabbering -- then you would never have reason to be bothered by his words again. ;)

As for the rest:

I see no reason why you should feel "brown," but obviously, you've been insulted and everyone comes to terms with that in their own ways. You'll be a stronger woman, I know.

Well, Slyc, there is insult ("you are a kept MILF") and there is racism (I always think of you as inferior to me cuz you are brown, I don't even say it but I always think it and make it obvious to you.)

Thank you for your well-founded faith in my strength of character. I do feel better for sticking up for myself here, and for filling in the survey my BME network at work ran the other week (which made me realise it's not just me who is experiencing strange incidences of prejudice), and for telling off the school for asking the kids to discuss a stupid topic.

Well and appropriately said, Naoko. :rose:

Thank you :)

Chester Himes is like the underbelly of the Harlem Renaissance. He shows the absolute desperation and poverty of that community in those times, shows it with humour. When you are that poor, if you don't laugh about the difficulties you're going through, you end up being sucked in and under like his characters.

He often starts his stories with something happening that's so wildly unlikely that you can't imagine how it came about. Part of the fun is unravelling the story backwards with Coffin Ed and Grave Digger Johnson, the black detectives. It's like Marquez's Chronicle of a Death Foretold, except Himes is writing way earlier.

JBJ, I know you are not a racist, although you sometimes think that because you are so un-racist you can have a play with racism and catch some of the 'sissy white boys' with their trousers down. (Urrgh, sorry, brief and unattractive vision popped into my head.) But sometimes you might catch the brown people. Not that I am acksherly brown, of course. Sort of pearlescent golden. I also know you love to catch me with my trousers down ;).

Those who're brown stick around! Or is it, those who brown stick around?

A few hasty words from an online moron can sometimes trigger the most painful response. I'm sorry that someone you apparently formed a rapport with turned about and used that rapport against you. Unfortunately, with the ultimate anonymity of the Internet, even apparent friends can stab you in the back with impunity.

But, as I suspected, you're a stronger woman.

And, to both keep the thread on track and to maintain the relevance to you, Duchess, I offer this quote from Mr. Himes:

I would sit in my room and become hysterical about the wild incredible story I was writing. And I thought I was writing realism. It never occurred to me that I was writing absurdity. Realism and absurdity are so similar in the lives of American blacks one cannot tell the difference.
