Game of Thrones Thread WITH SPOILERS (you've been warned)

So you know they follow the book? Because, for example, Walking Dead doesnt.

So far, they have made some changes from the books, but nothing that significantly alters the plot. Giving Robb a different wife, and having her killed instead of fading into obscurity is probably the bigger change so far, and in the overall scheme of things, it doesn't matter much. I doubt there will be many other significant changes. There are a few minor characters (Strong Belwas!)they have written out that disappoint me.

I have not seen the latest season of Walking Dead, but I'd have to say deviating from the comics isn't a bad idea, since the series just sank further and further into nihilism and despair, in my opinion.

No, the wildlings are trying to get as far away from the zombies as they can, that's why they are trying to invade the south.

Is it my imagination or do the different realms mimic certain actual cultures? Like, the wildlings seem kinda Irish.

Perhaps, or the Picts or one of the other Celtic groups.

In a rough sense, the Starks and the other northerners are an analog for the Scots, the Lannsiters/Baratheons for England, the Grayjoys for the Vikings, Tyrells for the French and Dorne for Spain.

The free cities in Essos are based loosely on the Mediterranean city states such as Venice, Naples, Genoa, etc. The Dothraki are the Turks/Mongols, and the slaver cities where Dany is wandering are much like the Muslim cities of Persia and Central Asia. There are allusions to land further east that might represent China and India, but we haven't seen them.

Right now, my money's on the dragon girl. Or the zombies.

Well, a song of ice and fire, yes?

Fire and Ice

Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I've tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.

That's actually very interesting. Is that your opinion or the general consensus? Seems plausible.

I really don't know if it's a consensus or not, I think it probably is, considering the way they have handled it so far.

Ive had similar thoughts to the Lord of the Rings. Knowing that the author spent his younger years in WWI I believe that you can assign the various villainous characters to his foes in that war. Or maybe WWII. Nazis, Russians so on. What do you think?

Tolkien was pretty adamant that there was nothing in LOTR that was meant to be historical analogy, but at the same time, any author is to some degree influenced by the times they live in.

It's human nature to bring some of your environment into your writing, whether it's history or ancestry or everyday life. He could have not purposely used World War influences in LOTR but that doesn't mean it couldn't be slipped in subconsciously.

Yes, exactly. How do you live through one of the most world altering eras in history and not internalize any of it's effects?
