Do you ever write, have no fucking idea what youre doing, and learn what the madness was about, later?

Its how I garden. And in your case I suspect its the bloom of genius....genius just does it. No Cliff Notes. No rehearsals.

Like I say all the time, its that Nike slogan

Just do it.

I don't see it as genius, but simply not caring what others are going to think. I do my thing and do the best I can with what I got.

Youre modest...and wrong.

When I'm writing fiction ... all the time. (With non-fiction I find that it is usually necessary to be a bit more organised.) :)

Not really. I wish I could do it right now though. I have pages of notes waiting to be woven into a story.

I plod through one sentence at a time.

And it will be done. Right? Of course!

As I have wound my way through life I have found these moments becoming more and more prevalent.

Wait? What are we talking about?

Never mind, I figured it out. Tab D goes into Slot V, yeah that's it.

First: Nike rather 'borrowed' their slogan. Some of us may still associate JUST DEWW IT! with Mountain Dew. But I digress.

OP: It's called The Dune Dilemma, as in, What am I dune here? Whatever we do, whether writing or something productive, we can all too easily step off into open space and just lose ourselves, like The Fool tarot card.

I recently read of scientific research that explains The Dune Dilemma, and it's all about doorways. Yes, doors. Ever walked into a room and forgotten why you went? That's because the mind prepares itself for the new room by discarding short-term memories of the last room. Passing through the doorway effects a partial mind-wipe. To keep track of where we are and why, we must CONCENTRATE. Don't slam the door on your brain.

Writing, we take ourselves into new worlds, through conceptual doorways. We forget where we were and even who we are. Are you one of your story's characters? Can you ever escape?

Jumping in with both feet to see where this goes is a lot of fun. Well, most of the time anyway.

In a sense. I've written in a direction and have experienced the story/characters taking over and running the show from east to west and north to south and I'm just along for the ride. Fun, actually.

That's often how it happens for me, too. I usually like to have an ending in sight when I start a story, but it doesn't always work out that way. Then there are times I just start writing about nothing in particular and let the story sort of magically appear.

I am learning my lesson with this one. I have once tried to wrangle my characters back into the direction I had in mind then I hated the entire thing, as if my characters turned on me and refused to cooperate anymore. So I abandoned the story. So, I considered that as a lesson to not be as much of a control freak and enjoy the outcome.

One of these years. I have written one part of the tag team story. I wrote it twice. Still not sure if it's right.

Pshaw! We always know when its right, cuz it delights us, and we just gotta share it with everyone.

It wasn't. And then I had to drop out. I was in over my head.

Sure, happens to us all:rose:

I'm making a general observation that we usually know when our joke is clever, and when anything we do hits the target.
