Hi everyone - this is my first post. I've posted three chapters of a story and I notice that although my ratings are better with each one, my total viewership has declined with each one (even accouting for the dates posted). I'm guessing that this is because a certain percentage of readers who read the first chapter got turned off (or whatever) and didn't read the next chapter.

So for the authors out there, do you find that ratings or # views are a better indication of the appeal of your story?

Any first story will have a lot more views than a subsequent chapters. It just will. People who go on this site randomly looking for strokers will generally click on any story that doesn't have a number on it, and first chapters usually aren't numbered. As soon as the strokers realize that your story is plot-focused, or find out that it's part of a series, they'll click off. Or even if someone does read chaptered stories, if they don't like your writing style, they usually find out early. 1st or second chapter.

Over time, the views do even out slightly, and develop into patterns. Your first story will be the only one that continues to earn lots and lots of votes, though the others will crawl up slowly. You will have a lot more views on the last chapter if your series is finished. And if you have certain chapters that end positively, (a reunion, a first sex scene, an important revelation) that will get more views than darker or more boring chapters.

The score will also be lowest on your first story, because a number of people that wont bother reading the rest of your chapters will give you a low or mediocre score on the first chapter, and not put any views on the others. If a fan reads up to chapter nineteen of your story, then he/she is invested and will probably be 5-starring every chapter as they go along. The longer your story is (even if it isn't a very popular one, and has a low amount of votes and views) the more positive the reviews will get as it goes.

The obvious exception is the last chapter. If you decide to go with an ambiguous ending, or a bad ending (or if it is a Loving Wives story) the last chapter will get a very polarizing score.

That's actually a tool you can use to gage a long-running story series, see how many stars the last chapter has compared to a chapter in the middle. If it's more, happy ending. If it's less...

There will be a lot of comments. :)

A high number of views is an indication that you either have a good reputation or a good title... or that your story has been up for an extended period of time.

A high number of votes is an indication that many people read your story all the way through.

A high score is an indication that the people who read it, liked it.


Personally I am most interesting in the number of views since it equals exposure...

Welcome to the AH.

Cruel's pretty much got it covered. The casual readers and trolls drop off as the series moves on. YOu get less readers, but the ones you get are your fan base which will increase the score.
 
I wanna know how much is a high score for views?
 
My favorite part is how everyone is nice to the newbie.
 
And nasty comments in Loving Wives isn't a condemnation, it's high praise. :D

I just read through the comments on this thread and wish that there was a 'like' button similar to what facebook has Several/most of the little clever comments and interplay were funny, didn't think I would break in and comment on them, but youse guys are smart and it comes out in your comments and I smiled at them and wanted to push a like button.

Which reminds me. Haven't been on facebook for two weeks and my wife has mentioned comments from mutual friends several times. I should probably go waste some time there.
