Never mind the awards--who do you think will have the gown (or tux) of the evening? I always find it interesting how star power comes into play with fashions at the Academy Awards. The actresses/actors become high-energy models, getting viewers to look at the fashions because they are movie stars. Like models, they sell looks that might appeal, but, being actresses/actors, also make looks appeal because it is they who are wearing them.

Certain gowns/tux styles strike and proliferate into the general culture, others, however lovely, are ignored, and, of course, others get remembered forever...for better or worse. And what's most interesting is that sometimes it isn't the most popular actress/actor who gets everyone's attention and shakes up the fashion landscape. Some forgotten or ignored actress/actor can become the talk of the night, all thanks to one very interesting gown/tux.

And have any of you ever written a "Red Carpet" story? A fateful meeting on said carpet, the outfit she/he is wearing irresistible, etc.?

I know nothing about fashion, but I do enjoy watching the parade of gowns. Tuxes, unfortunately, look pretty much the same to me.

I would bet on good stuff from Jennifer Lawrence, Lupita Nyong'o, and probably Meryl Streep.

In Tampa Bay 89% of us are predicted to skip the Oscars or catch it channel surfing. Its lost its glamour long ago, and tonites another affirmative action snooze.

I though that the designer (and I use this term somewhat loosely) loaned to the Actress a design of dress so the name is shown clear; free advert !

That used to be the situation.

Now the actress gets paid too.

But if she's a B-lister, she doesn't, and has to borrow a dress and/or actually buy it.

Wow. Didn't know they got paid. But it makes sense. Back in the day, there weren't that many high-end designers. They were each very much in demand and could pick and choose their jobs. So the actresses had to fight to get the designer they wanted for that one-of-a-kind dress—a dress that might take a year for a designer to make for that one night.

Now there are a great many high-end designers and that one-night spotlight is very important to all of them. It's a global event and the dresses will be more publicized, more viewed and tweeted by the social media, than the winners of the awards. If, by paying her, a designer can get the highest profile starlet to wear his/her gown instead of someone else's, why not?

I suspect that goes for the jewelry (almost always on loan), hairstyles and shoes, too. Hm. Maybe even the make-up?

Liked Lupita's Prada gown best. From what I'm reading, everyone did and is ranking it #1 of the night (nice that she won and got to show it off ). Expect spring/summer fashions to riff off it. Pale blue might well be the new "in" color. Especially given the popularity of the animated movie "Frozen" where the ice queen dresses in striking ice blue.

I liked Jennifer Garner's dress, and Angelina Jolie's. Don't recall seeing anything that was outright awful. I thought Cate Blanchett's was nice, but it looked a little like she had earrings or key rings or something hanging on it.

I must correct myself: Whoopi Goldberg. No idea what was going on there, except she was being herself, I guess. But she looked stuffed into it. Wasn't terribly flattering.

Jennifer Lawrence looked good, as did Miss Nyong'o. I thought her dress was white at first, but the light blue was a nice choice.

For the men, Jared Leto and Matthew McConaghey stood out with the white jackets (and of course Leto's red bow tie).

Evidently it shimmered "white" because each pleat has tiny beading. Must have been even more if one was there to see it. I loved the way it floated. Some of those other dresses were pretty, but they seemed so weighty.

Yes, it did seem a nice, light dress. Filmy, if I may.

It was nice to see a fair bit of color in the dresses, too.
