Citius - Altius - Fortius
I'll admit it...I am addicted to competition. Two competitors matching strength, strategy, cunning, and wit - drawing from the deepest recesses of their inner fiber to emerge victorious...this enthralls me.
I further admit to being a typical American male - watching football, baseball, hockey, soccer...just about any sport they televise. And I absolutely love being at a game in person. Professional, College, International...it doesn't matter. I enjoy the sport for what it is - a game, a competition.
At the pinnacle of my obsession are the Olympic Games. I know that "big business" and "money" has corrupted all levels of sport, but to me the Olympic Games remains that single unadulterated bastion of competition in it's purest form. The athletes compete for the purest of motives - for themselves, for their families, for their countries. It's not about the paycheck nor the promise of a lucrative professional career. It's for the right to say, "I am the greatest in the world!"
I was a fairly accomplished athlete before age and injuries overtook me - never close to Olympic-caliber mind you, but good enough to get looks from professional scouts. That was decades and a life-time ago. I've happily transitioned to coach, supporter, and spectator now - roles I relish with great satisfaction as I watch the new generation take their places on the podiums. In honor of this year's Winter Olympic Games I present the following series. And proudly say - "Go U.S.A! Bring home the Gold!!!"
