A Poet Walks Into a Bar . . .

That looks... pretty bad. I didn't know the UK had such trouble with floods.

EDIT: Actually, is this a normal occurrence in the UK, this time of the year?

Are we already connected? I lose track, sometimes, of Lit people over there and something will come up in a newsfeed and leave me trying to remember how I know a person. *sigh* My memory can have such selective gaps in it sometimes.

ha, that's the same problem i have... i know i've some people on my list i speak to here (as in Lit) but i don't there; with all the different names i get completely confused. so unless names are the same or i recognise the pics, i don't know who is who.

Look at the bottom of the map and find Brighton then follow straight up past the first 'Severe' till you see what looks like a red house disappearing under the water and that's where I am

any likelihood of having to get out of your property, annie? i'm confused as to how people stay in their flooded houses because of electrics and sewage issues... those who have any choice, that is. have you an escape route if you need it? do take care :rose:

winds are kicking up here so i'm keeping curtains and blinds drawn in case of anything coming through the windows. not that we're getting it as bad as wales and the north west.

no, this is extreme - much as parts of aus is getting hit with the heat and areas of the usa with the freeze. there's always the risk of some flooding if you live on a floodplain, but it's not frequent and not long-lasting the way this has panned out to be. the size of the area experiencing problems and the duration are pretty much new since recorded figures. it's the fixation of the jet streams that's creating the issues.

I hope you have secured what is precious and gotten to high ground. I've never had my property threatened by floods, but I have many friends who saw water halfway up the wall of the house, or worse. I have worked on sandbag crews more times than I can count and we never saved a house. It was always too little and started too late.

My advice to everyone is take the baby pictures and the insurance policy and get out. Anything you really want to survive, (books, etc), put them as high as possible.

Do not wade through flood water if you can't see your feet. Pot holes can form without warning. Manhole covers(or whatever you call them in the UK) can be dislodged by rising flood water. A person crossing the street can disappear and be 15 feet(or whatever you call them in the UK) underwater in an instant.

God I hope not! Our lawn is right under water now but the rest of the garden is ok, the strong gusts of wind are the problem. We have a 30 foot sycamore at the end of the garden and the neighbours a 35 foot pine so I hope to goodness they have strong roots. My garden is 100 foot so at least they wouldn't come down on the house. Ron says because the Sycamore hasn't got leaves at the moment it should be ok but the pine being evergreen is catching every blast and bending and groaning with every gust.

how goes it, annie?

Still here ....... wind blown and growing webbed feet. There's worse off than me, a friends stables and tack room got flooded but the horses are ok thank goodness!
As a matter of interest it's Seattle Rains birthday today ........ wonder if she still wonders through? Thank goodness for Facebook and keeping in contact with ex Lit members as well as those still around

10" inches here....er (I'm sure eagleyez is thanking me). :D

Your post made me giggle because here the only way we can get snow off the dish is to throw stuff at it. eagleyez goes out with a broom and hurls it at the dish. He's good at it, too. He has a good arm.

new winter olympic sport in its infancy, perhaps?

Something weirder than curling? That's something I'd like to see. :D

To be honest, our version only involves throwing a broom at the satellite dish on our roof in an attempt to knock off the snow and make the tv work. But it certainly looks weird!

We have not had to do it yet today but we might. The snow is coming down hard again and blowing sideways.

Well we are in a bar.... shall we practice HURLING?:D

(Now what the hell is hurling...)

Oh, ok.

Eeeeeh... Harry, are you sure it's a good idea to practice hurling inside? Shouldn't we at least hide the bottles? I don't know, swinging sticks + alcohol... It just seems the kind of sport that leaves someone without teeth.

yeah, you're right inside is no place for it, less it's in the restroom. The ally would be a better place to do our hurling
