I know this has nothing to do with writing, so I'll happily take this to PMs or email.

My son has Minecraft and wants to add mods but doesn't know how. I've tried poking around a bit but I don't quite understand the game itself, let alone the modifications you can use. I will read up but sometimes nothing is better than having someone actually tell you what's going on.

Help would be appreciated.

PM Dark he's a big gamer geek I believe.

I thought you were going to ask how to tame a horse. I heard of a kid teaching minecraft to adults. Maybe you could look him up.

Thanks. I'll do that. I'm not a gamer myself. It's hard to explain to our son that while we know a lot about computers, there's also a lot we don't know, such as this specific game, etc.

My son knows how to play, but he's read a lot and watched videos about using this "mods." The problem with the mods is that they are not sanctioned or made by Mojang, the company that makes Minecraft. One site I looked at re: mods warned that it could break your copy (although you can re-download it), and that updates to the game itself will probably break the mods.

Wish he'd just play the damn game.

Which game system is it? My son thinks you can only get it on some systems and you might have to buy the app from the App Store. (He plays on kindle fire.)

My son has it on a PC, my old laptop. So it's Windows. He's watched a lot of videos on how to play, and many of those apparently use these mods. I don't actually want to figure this out, but I guess I'll have to.

Maybe this is a good place to start...

Ayup.

I don't really consider myself "a gamer", but I know the tune and can whistle a few bars. That, though, is the one thing that has always got me. That a lot of people can't seem to just play without finding some way to cheat. ;)

Thank you. I think I found the Minecraft wiki, but this will be helpful, too. I need to learn to play, I think, so that I can see how the mods fit in.

I dislike most computer games.

You should! :D It's a fun game, I didn't realize how many people on the Lit forums played it. I may have to make a Lit Minecraft server sometime.

Minecraft is an unlimited lego set. There are some game modes that force players to achieve certain goals, but many people play it in "sand box" mode meaning it is purely an expression of their creativity. Many people can play in the same sandbox to build large creations.

The "mods" are similar to buying specialized lego sets. Minecraft comes with all the basic blocks. Mods add weapons, vehicles, prettier blocks, different competitive modes, different multi-player modes, etc.

Sounds like a good description, but I still need to figure out how to play, the controls, etc.

The problem with the mods, according to what I've read, is that they are not made by Mojang (which sells Minecraft). So any problems, you need to fix on your own.

I have played Minecraft for years but I never touch the modifications of it (mod is short for modification). Sure, they add tons of things, but the vanilla game is more than enough to keep me busy.

Mods aren't necessarily about cheating. Some are about adding new fun stuff to the game, some are about improving the interface. And if you're playing a single-player game, which Minecraft is by default, there's no such thing as cheating - just "selecting your preferred difficulty setting".
