Just for the memories, it was 50 years ago today when Beatlemania hit the shores of the United States.

(Maybe some older Brits can tell us if the group already was a sensation there before they took over the United States.)

And Sunday (Feb. 9th) when they appeared on Ed Sullivan and America at large got introduced to them). I was too young for that memory, but I'm certainly going to join in the 50th anniversary celebration :D

Ever heard of The Beat Brothers?

John, Paul, George, and Pete Best

No, but I've heard of the Silver Beetles. . .
And please do not forget the unfortunate Stewart Sutcliffe.

Yes, they'd already made a couple of popular records including a No 1 and done tours in Sweden and Germany.
It was only a screw-up with Capitol that prevented them touring the USA earlier.

My musical friends already knew of The Beatles in 1961. I was in Australia at the time - listening to Patsy Ann Noble. The Beatles became national icons late in 1962 and became predominate in the UK in 1963 after releasing their first LP.

I knew of the Rolling Stones in 1962 because one of them had attended my school, but their early visits to the US were a failure.

In the 1960s in the UK people supported either The Beatles OR The Rolling Stones, but The Beatles were the most successful at that time.

Interesting. I was stuck on folk music at the time, and as I noted on another thread, the first time I heard at the Beatles (probably the day before they arrived in the States), I thought the two girls talking about it were talking about the parents of one of the girls giving her a Volkswagen (Beetle). It probably took me another five years to discover that they actually did have some really good songs.

Nice touch with the "...it was fifty years ago today..."

My favorite band. Friends used to give me shit about it.
