You could read his memoirs. If I had to venture a guess he probably at the time was aware of just how badly the Germans had been fucked in the end of WWI and that WWII was the direct result of that fucking.

It doesn't matter in hindsight it seems that WWII was indeed quite necessary, though there's no way of knowing what would have happened if history had played out significantly differently.
