Advent (which began Dec 1st this year) is a penitential and prepatory season, and so decorations should not actually go up until sundown, Christmas Eve, then they stay up through the Twelve Days of Christmas until the Epiphany on January 6th.
However, in modern days we seem to decorate even before Advent.
For my money, don't put them up until after Thanksgiving...

i like giving gifts, but don't just reserve it for xmas time....i like to surprise friends and family throughout the year with little tokens.

I plant my Christmas tree every year, so I have the Christmas trees of years past already lit, but this year's tree can only be in for two weeks before it awakes from its dormancy, so it will wait a bit longer.
