Doctor Who

You're sure it's not nostalgia speaking?

It's like veteran cars - they're charming but functionally inferior to even the crappiest modern vehicle.

Btw. you can't compare the Abrams movie to one of the series - in that case you need to look at one of the movies featuring the old cast.

The fair comparison to TOS would be TNG, DS9, Voyager or Enterprise - all of which are superior in acting, production and writing. Roddenberry did well with the limited cash he had for TOS but a single episode of TNG had a budget about the size of an entire season of TOS, and it shows.
You are making my point you are looking at budget and special effects instead of storyline, writing and acting.
No the fair comparison is TOS the series to the movie using the TOS characters

Besides the Star Trek tv episodes on both TOS and TNG far surpassed the movies in quality

New is not always better, in fact the only remakes I think you could say are better are: The Fugitive, the untochables and the Thomas Crown Affair

or do you really think Will smith's Wild wild west compares to the TV series?

Ok - new is not automatically better.

But regarding a genre like scifi you must admit that the emmersibility of a movie is greatly enhanced by the special effects. It hardy matters how good the actors are if you keep switching back and forth between them and an external view of a space craft thats clearly identifiable as a model. Just like it's awfully hard to imagine the Enterprise as a huge space ship when you see the same small sets over and over again.

And lets face it - the only TOS actor with any real acting chops is Leonard Nimoy. The rest would most likely not have had a career without the fan base of StarTrek. Nichelle Nichols was cast because she is black, George Takei because he is asian, Bill Shatner was a generic hunk and Majel Barett got the job by screwing the boss. Compare this to the professional cast of TNG...

I'm sure all the Whovians here have already seen it but in case you missed it, Don't forget to watch the Prequel Mini-sode.

Night of the Doctor

You have to watch this, it leads into the 50th Anniversary.

They have to make the episode much longer than 75 minutes if they plan on living up to the hype so far. I'd say 8 hours... maybe 9. I could live with that :)

First we are making alternate comparisons, i am comparing ST TOS to the Abrams debacle. There have been plenty of sci fiction movies with great special effects but were terrible movies. the Matrix comes to mind.

I think you are discounting shatner's resume. And lets look at the STNG other than Stewart who has done much. Frakes and sitrus and Dorn do cartoon these days, Burton who had one major role before than is a very bitter man who plays the race card to justify his failed career

Other than Stewart, Colm Meany has had meaniful work after ST and he is more a DS9 character

But then you need to use the TOS movies as comparison though - and lets go for the best one, Wrath of Khan.

And it is a great movie. Not because of the TOS cast but because of Ricardo Montalban. Every scene with Khan is awesome - all the soapy stuff with Kirk and his failed relationship is filler at best.

There is no accounting for taste I guess, but in my opinion Into Darkness is a more coherent experience and of course way more believable in the sense that you have a feeling that their tech might actually work.

The first one was good - the two others shouldn't have been made.

No i don't because the greatnest of ST comes from the TV series not the movies, none of the ST movies for either the original or TNG were as good as the top 10 TV epsiodes of each.

And give me bad special effects and good story lines over graet special effects with no plots.

Just watched the 50th anniversary special

WOOHOO

Ok, in a writing sense, it was a bad attempt to string together a brand new plot direction...

But what a ride!

YAY!

That was just fun.

ETA: YAY YAY YAY YAY - I'm not the only one on here that is a Dr Who tragic! Although... bow ties are cool...fez's just aren't.

Heck yeah...the giggle factor was right up there. 'Sandshoes' 'Grandad' and 'Chinny'...love it!

And I admit, I even cried.

John Hurt was awesome and even Billie Piper didn't make me want to gag. She did alright.

I can even sort of see how they matched companions to Doctors now...

Can't wait for the next season.

Better yet, can't wait for the 3D screening at the cinema later today!

I'd like to get my daughter something for Christmas, she is a huge Dr Who fan. Any ideas?

There are some cool Dr Who bobby pins on Etsy (for my new shaggy short do), and a neat laptop case.

Along with charm bracelets and all manner of i-whatever accessories.

There's even a "TARDIS Starry Night" oil painting...

I got my friend a sonic screwdriver universal remote.

Just depends what type of girl she is.

That was epic. I thought Moffat did an excellent job rewiring things to work. Plus, ouch, Queen Elizabeth I was a very patient woman with 10.

And of course, that cameo at the end.

When Moffat nails it he hits it out of the park.

I've been thinking... and I think Moffat's lines at the end left an opening for McGann getting a season once Capaldi's done.

My daughter has the Van Gogh Tardis shirt, and blanket, Tardis knit hat, socks, sonic screw driver, and Tardis book reading light. The light was real cheap and the Tardis broke off, she also had a Police Box scarf that was HUGE that we sent back. Her fave is the shirt, blanket and hat.

Edit: also the Scene It Dr Who game. Must have other Whovians to play agAinst though.

Actually I thought she did really good - better than in her previous incarnations. I still prefer Jenna, but I hope they keep Billie's number on file...

I still have a hard time envisioning Carpaldi in the Tardis. Could it be a diversion? Like when they tricked us with David Morrissey?

With the theme of the 50th Anniversary being the Doctor has been acting like a child because of the weight of what he had done I think it's pretty appropriate the next Doctor is much older than the most recent ones.

Don't think Capaldi is a bait and switch at all.

and wasn't there the line 'time to grow up'?

Also, I thought I saw a pair of ruby slippers in the Black Archive. Some sort of secret weapon stolen from that billionaire in Utah?

No, those were high heels and worn by River previously.

Thank god Moffat knew to retire his creation for this go.
