Hello all! This thread is a place for Whovians to come and discuss Doctor Who.

maybe, but it still makes me go hmmmn. like calling star trek fans trekkies, it feels a bit off.

there are several, but you can't get too much Who in my opinion.

Who's your favourite Who?

I preferred David Tennant as the Tenth Doctor personally, although the Eleventh Doctor is growing on me.

I much preferred Rose Tyler to Amelia Pond as far as companions go.
River Song is simply awesome.

i loved chris ecclestone as the 9th - he was exactly what was needed to break the poor rep the show had earned itself after tom baker as no4. a fab actor and it was a loss to see him go. tennant is probably my overall favourite, too - you saw his hamlet? what a face. matt smith's ok, but the writing lets it down by comparison (imho). could be the writers were too busy messing concentrating on sherlock scripts

riversong is. :)

pond's ok, though i didn't like watching her acting. when she was 'being', it was better.
rose was fine and catherine tate a wonderful surprise!

the amy and rory thing, though, was simply lovely. bless.

It's a dumb show. Has been for years. Teen girls seem to like it now, but they also seem to think keeping up with the Kardashians is cool.

The other primary group of die hards seems to be the same group that think Big Bang is clever. Pseudo intellectuals that think they get something others don't. Thing is everyone gets it. Smart people just get that it is stupid.

I do think a lot of the fondness for some Brits is pure nostalgia, reminds us of our childhood fears. In a good way.

i'm hardly a teen, can't abide the kardashians, love TBBT and appreciate that not everyone's gonna find it funny.

you rate yourself as an actual intellectual, then? or just 'smarter than your average boo boo'?

I agree with this. If people would just admit it than it would be fine. But we all have to grow up. When it becomes "cool" to watch a show that's usually the first sign the show has jumped the shark.... Breaking bad and the wire being exceptions. But I will still reserve the right to make fun of Johnny come latelys.

Intellectual in occupation only, otherwise dumb as a brick.

So would you say nostalgia is a big part of your enjoyment of it today?

hiya :)

i admit to a nostalgic fondness for the old stuff, but that truly doesn't translate for me across time to the new ones. if i didn't like the new material, i'd stop watching it in a blink. ecclestone completely broke (for me) those old bonds (and disappointments!), making it modern, fun, and simply entertaining.

i'll leave some of the americans to their shouty wrestlers and honey booboo or whatever the crap it's called. each to their own. weirdos.

*bites tongue*

no, i really wouldn't. whilst i have some happy memories from ye olde black and white tv days, how i enjoy it now (which is less so since the writers changed) doesn't seem to depend on the past at all. nostalgia has its place but not at the expense of my pleasure.

Hey up! I love the old Tom Baker/Davros era, that was the one I grew up with. I watched some of Tennant for the perve factor and I did like his version of the Doctor, stopped watching when he left though. Also I do think the effects and story lines are more geared up to younger audiences so it's not my cuppa tea these days.

Best theme tune ever though.
