The mayor of Toronto just admitted that he smokes crack

Zumi, I love you

The camera one is classic. What's that second to last one?? What the fork is he doing?

It sort of reminds me of Glenn Beck's weird ironic standup act "I was driving, driving, driving and WHOA he pulls me over" or "I'm drinking, drinking drinking" (two-fistedly) "and then I fell over backwards!"

A little Ford lore for you cool cats: back before he was smoking crack and being whack, he cancelled a giant city-wide transit plan for streetcar and LRT line extensions and lost a bagillion dollars in promised contracts because "the people" wanted subways. "People" and people do prefer subways, but it was prohibitively expensive to expand the subway system enough that would meet the needs of the city (hence the planned surface route extensions).

Lots of people were mad at him, and in the process, he said the word "subways" A LOT. The press made fun of him for it. "Subways, subways, subways" was taken up as a mocking catch phrase - it replaced the "I'm going to cut the gravy" and "I'm going to stop the gravy-train" slogans from his campaign.

Long story short, here is Rob Ford saying "subways" for ten minutes. Ah, the nostalgia.

This is just a clear illustration that Canada can't govern itself. We (the US) should invade and bring democracy to that land.

Seriously, how did this guy get elected? Was he running against a serial killer or what?

Yeah, but hurry up about it in case your government shuts down again.

The areas that voted for Ford are suburbs. Toronto is a mega-city, and sometime in the 80s (maybe 70s), the metro extended from the downtown core (the red part, basically) like an amoeba to include those areas, and they hate things like downtown traffic and bike lanes and funding public transit. The mayor before, David Miller, was very much a downtown yuppie liberal ("Transit City" as described above was one of his signature projects), and even though he ran a balanced budget, people wanted to tighten the purse strings, and Rob Ford was the only one with a clear, consistent message that really appealed to the suburb voters.

The other issue is that Smitherman, the other name on the map, was just really meh and had been connected to a billion dollar waste scandal. There wasn't really any strong opposition. Bush-in-2004-esque.

Serial killers...downtown snobbish yuppies....same thing.

Espresso starts to lose its flavor profile within 30 seconds.

SNL skit was surprisingly great.

I was even impressed with the Canadian accents until they had to throw in an "aboot." Racists.

I always thought the tell-tale sign of a Canadian accent was "again". They say it as if it rhymed with "gain". And (even more inscrutably) "resource". They seem to throw a "z" there in at the end.

Oh, that's from the video of Rob pretending to drink and drive in his chair...apparently to slap another councillor who had a dui.

Pretty sure I just saw Phelia on the BBC discussing her view of the Mayor and his brother.

For example?

The downtown is becoming overpopulated because of all the new condominiums being built.

Transit is overwhelmed...The liberals got a seat back by promising a subway extension, but Ford gets trashed for it.

The place is dirty, crime is going over the top, gang murders every night.

I grew up there, last summer when I was there, I was disgusted by what it has turned into.

And, Ford should be allowed to do the job of Mayor. Council has no right to suspend his duties or budget. The people voted him in and they can vote him out.

I don't condone his illegal actions but he is still the mayor.
Council and the media is turning it into a circus and poking sticks at him to get a reaction

Don't they? What does the city charter or bylaws or whatever say?

Nope, they don't, they have no power to kick him out and taking his budget and regular duties is just sandbox tactics.

If they let things settle down like adults, then things would settle down and the cops can deal with anything criminal

"They are saying they will vote for a gerbil if they get a dollar back." Oh, sad but true.

We also pronounce "been" differently (long "e").
I was laughed at in the streets of New York for this.

Even high 24/7 and whoring nightly, he'd have to be an improvement over Harper.

In retrospect, his decision to blow off the UN meeting in favour of a Tim Horton's run was very Fordesque.

Smitherman was awful too. For the record, I voted Pantalone (Ward 19, baybee!)

Is "Canadian English" the same in all parts of Canada, or are there regional variations as in the U.S.?

After a summer doing tree-planting I made all my little Toronto friends laugh, imitating the Northern Ontario accent.

Its the same everywhere except Newfoundland,,,but accents vary...oh yeah..and Quebec...can hardly understand them

In areas where the First Nations populations are denser there's a clear difference in accents too. More classically "Canadian".
