He died yesterday from a terminal case of assholia majoris. He had it for years and it finally became too much and succumbed to being a complete asshole from head to toe.

Here in the AH, he won't be missed, because no one liked him or his self centered importance. He bragged constantly about his writing, but no one liked it. He put down anyone and everyone who disagreed with him about what he thought he knew.

He complained other authors didn't deserve the recognition they received, ironically, not deserving any himself. His style was lacklustre and droning to read and never amounted to much.

Yeah, he's dead, oh well.

HP, it's how things would be said about him if he died, the same way he comments about Clancy. He has shown no respect to the man and insists he is in his right to debase him. This is nothing more than switching names around and putting the shoe on the other foot.

Actually...accepting him for what he is and who he is, I like Sr71plt more than dislike him. Odd for me to say that especially in the long history that I have with the Pilot. Yet, then again, not as discriminating as I should be, I like Scouries, TxRad, and Dark too. I respect their intelligence and their opinions, that is, when they're not attacking me.

Yeah, sure we've had our disagreements and he can be a real prick but he's witty, funny, and intelligent and I respect those things about him. Being that he's here 24/7, I peg him as a lonely, older man as are so very many who haunt this board. Yet, just as you have every right to be here and to post here doesn't give you license to attack him.

I'd like to think that he'd stick up for me if I was being unduly attacked and he has several times years ago.

Listen Royce, I don't know who you are and you could be another sock puppet alt for all that I know but being that you seemingly just started writing here and want to maintain your high scores without attracting bashers, an ounce of sugar is worth much more than a pound of salt.

Well Royce, you know I'm not a fan of Pilot, but if he wants to have a low opinion of someone he has the right.

But having stcuk up for his right to freedom of speech, as for Clancy? All his claims of "knowing" him and alluding to having worked with him are just more of his compulsive lying disorder.

Remember this is a guy who touts "real world mainstream publishing success" then mentions in other posts his royalties pay for a couple of cruises a year. Far cry from "success" and a few grand a year.

Although you certainly have the right to dislike someone, even intensely, taking it to this metaphorical place is an insult not to sr71plt, but to those who equate death with something serious.

SJP, wait until you pass and we'll see what glowing words of praise he has to share. This thread was a mockery of plt and his callous posts towards a man who has just passed away. To speak ill of the dead, regardless of their own thoughts on them, is one of the lowest forms of disrespect.

This was done in the same vein as Clancy's, where a man has died and now we'll just bash his memory around and destroy anything nice about the man's life. I know he didn't write everything himself, but that gives no reason to say what ply has been saying about him.

A tribute thread is about honouring a person's life, not destroying all the man was.

ETA: if bashing my scores is what results, I can start looking at you and plt as the reason. This about respecting people and your mention of 1 bombing shows where you head is at. My stories and my posts are completely separate entities and should be treated accordingly.

I disagree in the method. You don't like someone, fine, I get that. Why isn't exactly clear and for me is so out of bounds I don't really want to know, but death and grave defiled and eulogy shot all to hell isn't a reasonable penalty. Neither is an attack in a form that refers to something that violates site rules and has the potential to give out personal (and painful) information if probed.

As a tactical discussion of what's in bounds or out of bounds it's not about methods so much as site rules and general custom and manners.

You have your own methods, I have mine. Sure, I could lurk and form opinions and give nobody at all a chance to defend themselves, which seems kinda petty. I could over explain my interpretation, which is pretty much what I usually do, but then at least people know where I stand and I said what bothered me once and then I drop it. You know, you don't care, we're clear.

Same as if someone came on and called someone a retard or a fag or any other "insults" that say more about the sayer. I'd prefer it didn't happen, if you don't care, then at least I said it once and I won't mention it again.

I mean, I hope not, some times I lose track of who said what to whom, but I don't think I've said it to you. So...I said it.

It's not iggy material, it's just a preference. I'll probably ignore it if it happened again, but I usually say it at least once. It may seem intrusive but from my point of view it's a social responsibility and a courtesy.

There isn't censorship, but there's definitely individual levels and standards of censure.

I'm a fan of the free speech format without moderation, but that doesn't mean that I am personally fine with whatever. I also have the ignore option and virtual ignore of just not giving someone's opinion that much weight because the ensuing conversation will be abusive or boring.

Alas, for me, boring is a more severe crime than strict abuse. Abuse I can do something with, boring is...well...death to creativity.

I don't have any difficulty believing that at all. I passed that point with this particular person myself a while back.

Occasionally there is no benefit at all to being the grownup in the room.

There is however a drawback to the alternative.

I suppose I run the risk of being trolled or whatever, but -- sr71 has not attacked Clancy, in this or any of the other threads that I have read. Stating an unpleasant truth may be a bit tacky, but it isn't about dishonoring anyone and doesn't make the fact any less true.

sr71 has made posts where he notes his condolences for Clancy's family, etc. He has not said anything about Clancy being a bad person, and neither has anyone else.

However, it may be that Clancy is in fact, not a great writer. Personally I have never finished any of his books, and I tried reading Red October three times. I did some googling and it is clear that he did not do all the writing on his own, and it is not hidden; many results, for example, state upfront that Larry Bond co-wrote Red Storm Rising. Some of the other statements, such as Jim Sutton writing Red October I couldn't verify except to find quotes that Sutton "worked closely" with Clancy on the book, things like that. Maybe that's some sort of industry code, I don't know.

It's also clear that for series such as Op Center or Rainbow Six, it's Clancy's in name only, but again, it's not like anyone's hiding that.

Whatever else, it does appear that Clancy made the most of his opportunities, and I don't think anyone begrudges him that. I certainly don't.
