I once met a guy who had proof that Stephen King killed John Lennon. It means nothing about Stephen King, or John Lennon, or proof.

I have an odd ability to be able to place most US accents within hundred or two miles of a person's hometown. You'd be surprised how much information lives in vowel pronunciation. But there are times where nothing about their accent places them in any one place. In those cases, almost every time, either dad was in the army and they moved every two years, or one or both parents was from another country/region.

You're obviously Australian. Your mom had a Vietnamese accent. You don't. But her accent, either slight or severe, is contained somewhere in yours. No big mystery there.

In other words, it doesn't mean Stephen King killed John Lennon.

It was annoying but not because they loved it, a few years ago when I was in NY I got lost and had to ask for directions - I swear to god nobody could actually understand what I was saying. And being NYers they got exasperated with me pretty fast, hah!

I would guess maybe her mother is a bit like mine in that she would flip her lid if you were sloppy in your speaking and sounded like a local. that creates a more precise diction.
