Checking On New Story Status

Those "one person," "vague complaints," and "can't resolve" phrases are just too precious--and indicative of the situation. What a champ.

Ya got me. I'm all those accounts making up all of those user complaints and irritated queries about how the Web site doesn't work--and I'm also the only one who has ever seen them. Ya got me there. :D

Actually, we're in the process of reworking that. The idea of "Favoriting" an author will likely be a thing of the past because it has no meaning. Instead, readers will be able to "Subscribe" to an author, which means they will be made aware of any new stories by that author and - once we have author comment boards - any new comments by that author.

As for story and poem submissions, in the future there will be two main lists: a Favorites list, and a Reading list. Right now, many readers are using the Favorites list as a To-Read list. This will hopefully end this and make the Favorites list more accurate.

Additionally (and this is all non-final so the specifics could change with implementation), readers will be able to create their own lists of stories, which they will be able to share publicly, with Friends, or keep private.

Just to be clear:

When the big changes are made, peoples Favorites will still exactly the way they are right?

It's just that a new feature will be added, which is the To-Read List.

Thanks Laurel, :caning:

It's a shame, because he's a wonderful writer and a smart guy...complaints that are vague and which I will never be able to resolve. I'd rather spend my working on problems which can be resolved.

You're right boss he is an asshole. ;)

So what problems are you working on?

And hey, by any chance did I miss it? Did LAUREL, among her numerous posts this weekend, let us know the status of the Annual Awards and the Monthly Contests?

And has anyone else noticed that the spat on this thread sounds remarkably similar to typical lovergirl/ace thread discussions?

lovergirl can't be an ALT of ... oh no, could it be?

And a very big thanks to the dumbtexan ... who has in the past taken the time to contact us directly with problems and improvements in a respectful, helpful, polite manner. Keep 'em coming!

I have to say that the above is my "favoritest" LAUREL  quote of all time. PTL...

And I wonder how many "wins" our "polite" lapdog has won over the years on last minute sweeps?

Yeah, scouries, you might have actually gotten some answers but then you had to make up a bogus post and lies. So typical.

Sorry to any and all who have him ignore but i wanted this one saved for posterity.

I've worked on trying to update major computer systems while keeping them live. It's not a piece of cake. I can sympathize with Laurel, Manu and the rest.

I have seen some very nice things come out. I like the new category hub, and readily confess, I use the feedback portal and category hubs to find new stories, not the new page. I also use the Similar Stories, after finishing the current one.

tags.literotica.com is extremely useful, unfortunately it doesn't cover the majority of the stories written before 2005-2006. It's hard to find, but I like using it both as a reader AND a writer.

I can understand that the Favorites have always been in 'beta', and never made formal. Without the planned 'subscription' functionality, its usefulness is seriously diminished. Doesn't mean I don't use it a lot. I like to dig down into readers favorites, see what they're 'liking' and explore that way.

The delay in syncing scores, votes and comments on different pages is irritating, but not a serious issue. Disparities in scores from different pages, again, distracting, but not critical. It's all about the timing.

The fact that the comments are currently broken, and older ones are not accessible from the comments section of new stories is a serious issue. I believe it was introduced with the latest changes, and will undoubtedly be fixed before too long.

I don't have a problem with the few number of new stories visible on the hub pages , but it needs to be paged, so you can go back further in time. Otherwise, it misses some new stories, particularly in categories that have been receiving a lot of new stuff, like BDSM. The FAWC contest was a great example.

Like any piece of software there are bugs. For a reader, I believe the site is excellent. Easily searchable, categorized a number of ways, a straightforward reading mechanism, easy to score, easy to comment.

For a writer, things are little less intuitive, figuring out what's wrong with a submission, how long before it will post, how to edit an existing story, change a category or title, delete a story, are all difficult to ascertain. Fortunately the Author's Hangout has enough people willing to address those issues. Once a writer's been through the hoops a few times, it's not so bad.

I am a bit selfish. I'd like to think that writing popular stories is as important to a site like Literotica, as sitting on the forums day after day, updating what I'm listening to or what I'm drinking. I could use more PM space, but I guess I'll have to post a lot of junk messages to get there. It would be cool if among the titles accessible for your avatar, some would have something to do with writing stories.

I greatly appreciate Laurel's latest effort to catch us up on what's going on, and to provide a bit of insight into her side of things. I do wish it was a little less rare. Taking a few minutes to update the Site Announcements would be especially helpful - describing new features, times when the system would be undergoing updates, etc. I notice that currently there's nothing in the site announcements (the newest being more than 75 days old, last March.) The Author's Hangout library is definitely due for an update, the last one being in 2008.

There's no doubt, this is still, running away, the best place to write and get visibility for your stories, and feedback. Admittedly a lot of the feedback is junk, but there's some good stuff in there. I know my time writing here has made me a better writer.

That's my $.02 for what it's worth.

I've been following this thread with interest, humor, and not a little bit of eye-rolling. My own contribution is merely a question. Am I to understand that Laurel knows about the broken comments? Several of us were debating whether to send PMs or not.

I don't disagree with much of what TTT posted--and contrary to the impression Laurel is trying to establish, I've been extremely supportive of the Web site--because it doesn't address much of what I've tried to address.

And, again, dropping dead or hopelessly broken programs doesn't require anything more than posting of a message and stopping the associated activity.

Your 2 cents is worth $37 and change. ;)

Comments broken?

I assume you're talking about the "see all comments" link, because everywhere else, things seem fine. I just got one today on an old story, and it doesn't yet appear on the "see all comments", but it is showing up in recent comments.

The same story had a comment 4 days ago, and it shows up everywhere, as expected. All my comments are showing up on "Chase" and "Friend" and so is a comment on "Lowborn" from 4 days ago.

Is it something that's happened since the 3rd? Because everything prior to that appears to be working perfectly for me in IE, Firefox, and Chrome.

EDIT: Make that the 4th, because I just checked a comment on another old story as Les from that day, and all appears to be well.

I think this may be one of the many odd cache things we've been seeing in recent years. Things aren't appearing immediately as we're used to, but they do appear eventually.

At a certain point, the comments on my old story no longer appear at the end of the story, but if I click on the "Recent Stories" tab and then the "Read All Comments" highlighted phrase, they come back.

"The Last Triton Chapter 8" posted this afternoon in nonconsent and on the see all comments page only 3 comments show up out of 29 that have been left. The story isn't listed on her author page either. If this isn't a known issue we'll send a PM.

For new stories, the comments are broken, or have been for the last 3 days. Yes, it's probably some kind of cache issue, but it's relatively new. I never had this problem to this extent before.

Comments are added, the last five show up under the story. The numbers are tracked. Show all comments only shows the first few, even two days later. My story had 120 comments and I could only see the first seven, and latest five for two days, without going through my author submission page.

The Last Tritan, currently has 29 comments. Show all comments lists 3.

It's exactly in the range of time for me not to have picked up on it until the new comment today, then.

So, to be specific, the "show all comments" page is not working properly, and hasn't been since perhaps the 4th and certainly the 5th.

Any comments made since that point aren't appearing there, though they do appear to be properly saved by the system, because they're showing up in the "recent comments" section below the story, on the "recent activity" page, on our private "moderate comments" page, and the counter is properly keeping track everywhere the number of comments are shown.

Sending a PM to Laurel now.

Thank you! Waterburn also said the comments were not showing up on her recent activity page either. She has to go to the story to see if there are any new comments, and then that is where she can only see the most recent ones, not all of them.

We appreciate your assistance.

That's odd. I know the recent activity page is working for me, because I just got a comment a couple of hours ago and it's there.

I thought I was you?

How can I be Pilot if I'm you?

Actually I thought you were dark.

Thank you to all who responded to my question and especially Laurel. Being a first time submitter of a story, I was not sure how this worked. I'm patient. Please take your time, I was not aware of the contest, or of it slowing things done. I appreciate all you do. Thanks
Laura

My problem seems to be when I click on the recent activity page link to a comment it wont be there on that list of comments and i have to go to the actual story to read it. Its a small inconvenience not like I can't read them at all and at the moment I am not enjoying the negative feedback from killing of a long standing character, so I can live until they fix the glitch. ;)

Now, that is happening to me, but it's the problem with the "see all comments" page that the recent activity page links to, rather than a problem with the recent activity page itself.

If Waterburn isn't seeing the comments noted on the recent activity page ( it isn't exactly clear from jennyb's post ) then there's something else that may need looking into. If she meant Waterburn can't read the full comment by clicking the link on the recent activity page, then that's the same bug that's already reported.

I had mentioned this (I think) on the contest thread,

Several times I saw a comment on the "recent activity" page, but when I clicked the story the comment did not show up there for a couple of hours.

Seeing as "we're here" I also repeat that it seemed as if myself and others experienced some freezing on the voting for a time as well.

I think Laurel mentioned they were working on some things which always means some kind of glitches in other areas. So maybe this is all a result of that.
