Hi Lit,

We have a blog, and would like to quote some of our favourite passages from the Lit stories that we read.
If we credit the story and author, would most authors prefer a link to the story that the quote came from, or a link to the author's Bio?

Hi,

I don't have a blog.

Are you going to ask permission before you quote someone's story?

TIA.

Lit's FAQ addresses linking to this website: http://literotica.com/about.shtml

I'd also contact each author and ask them how they'd like to handle additional recognition for their work.

Authors take their copyright seriously. You sound as if you don't understand the basics of fair use. Read up on it.

Thanks for your replies.

To be clear, I am only talking a sentence or two. Personally I don't consider this to be stealing, not given the context of the blog and the presence of crediting the story and author as well as a link back here to literotica. I am not trying to pass off the quote as mine.
I think I understand the intention of fair use. It's a blog on erotica, and I consider this to fall into the category of review and arguably research.

I wouldn't contact the author in advance, but if this is a deal breaker, then to be honest, I think I would just not bother.

Lit's FAQ only refers to linking the site (which is more than welcome) rather than crediting an author.

In the end, I would rather respect the authors here, as my wife and I have enjoyed many of the stories over the years. Which is why I asked the question in the first place.

Why not contact the authors? If you enjoy their work, I expect they would appreciate the correspondence. I've contacted authors when I've cited their works in my own (and properly credited the sources, but that's part of my profession), and every time they've been happy that (a) someone actually read their stuff and (b) I made the effort to tell them what I've gotten from their work. Especially if you're writing a blog on erotica, don't you want to strengthen those connections?

You found these stories through Literotica, so it makes sense to credit and link back to this website. Although I read the FAQ to also link to the specific portion of the site that you are referencing, so the specific story you'll be quoting or discussing. That accurately credits the author and the source.

Point taken. It's not that I don't want to, or would not, contact the authors, it's just that I would not necessarily make contact and wait for a reply in order to quote a sentence. I would however credit the source. My referencing skills are rather rusty, but there would definitely be a minimum of story title, author's name and a link to the story.

Maybe I need to just make contact now with the authors that I like now and get permission to be able to quote them at will. Rather than the other way around - find the quote and see if I can use it.

I am with Mischka here. A direct URL to the source story not only will keep you on the right side of fair use, but also will keep you in high regard with the authors you are quoting. You mentioned rusty linking skills. The most efficient way to link to an article is to cut and paste the url directly into an html refer tag. You probably are using a content management system of some kind that will do the coding for you, but if not, you can cut and paste html code from websites like this.

Permissions aren't required for a quote of a sentence or two from anything. Just cite the story title and author and Literotica as a source and you're doing fine, OP. It's nice if you are offering to do any linking, but that's beyond requirements, so if you don't get a feel from here what Lit. authors would prefer, you're free to link whatever you want on your blog--or not do it at all.

Was this moved from the GB?

Seems up until Pilot all replies were GBer's.

Which means, OP you're getting feedback from the wrong people.

Personally as long as I'm credited I don't care. If I didn't want my stuff popping up all over the place I wouldn't have put it here.

Free advertising? Fine and dandy with me.

As to the question, I'd personally prefer a link directly to the story referenced, if it was me. The links to find the rest of my stories are easy enough to find at the top and bottom of each page of the story.

Since your goal is to highlight the story, that makes the most sense to me.

This was my attitude before posting, and I was surprised at the initial replies. I'm glad I made the original post as it gives me a little insight to the differing attitudes to what I thought was a quite innocuous question.

Yup. Go ahead. I'm surprised that so many found this as "stealing". Referencing is fine, and I actually think that its good exposure for the site and the authors here.

No need to contact me to ask permission, in my opinion.

It looks like this started on the GB. I'm surprised the answers were that civil, actually. That's why it was moved here. Very few authors post on the GB and if they do, they wear their anti-contamination suit. ;)

If you give me credit and a link, feel free to sample my writing.
