Due to Sweden’s innovative waste-to-energy program and highly efficient recycling habits, the Scandinavian nation faces an interesting dilemma. They have run out of trash.

You may have noticed, fellow authors, that many bleak and sad stories from Sweden (like Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) are currently very popular. Mostly they feature investigators in a harsh, depression situation with harsh, depressing endings.

Given the great education, health, etc. of Sweden (and other such wintery places where similar television, books and movies are coming from of late), I had to wonder, what have they to be so sad about? Now I know.

I think you have that wrong. I think they're laughing all the way to the bank and dancing in the streets. They write for the US market and know what appeals to readers there. Their lives are well lived in a clean country and their economy is boosted by other countries too stupid to do what they're doing.

Far from it. They rank far higher on the list of G20 countries, than the US. They have a more stable economy and standard of living much better than the US. I can't think of one city, or town in Sweden that has declared bankruptcy either, unlike NY and Detroit have.

No one there complaining about lousy health care, or unemployment, so once again, you confirm yourself the asshole you said you were. Gotta get those facts straight.

Sweden has a lot of good points, but no country's perfect. A recent case highlighted problems with the "Swedish Model" of criminalising sex work.

"Petite Jasmine" was unapologetic about doing sex work... so the courts decided that she MUST be a silly deluded woman who didn't know what was good for her, and they gave her violent stalker ex full custody of their kids, and ignored her attempts to get a restraining order. When she fought the case and managed to get visitation rights, he stabbed her to death.

Sex work is a thorny area and there are real abuses that need to be dealt with, but victimising sex workers isn't the answer.
