Lemme the start with; the wrong response here is "just go do it"

I cannot stand to exercise.

10 years in the military and I never did one extra push up that I didn't have to.

im fatter than i need to be.

got my glands checked and back in check.

i could stand to eat less, but i aim for (and fail to stay close to) 1500 calories a day.

Mrs says 'if more pussy and a bigger dick wont motivate you, then i dont know what will"

ya... it seems oddly enough that those are not enough motivation.

so, how do i induce the the right kind of stroke that will make me want to exercise.

Good question. The best thing to do is to find a way to make exercise fun and to do it in a manner that it doesn't seem like exercise.

Fire the yard service and mow your own lawn. Vacuum the house more often. Park further away from things and walk more. If you enjoy riding a bike, get a GOOD* bike and start riding. If you enjoy swimming, join a gym and start swimming. Do you like sports? Start playing one.

You don't have to "exercise", simply get out and get moving. Go for walks after dinner with the wife. Use the wife to help motivate you, join that gym together, do more activities together.

*Don't just go out an buy the first bike you see. Test ride as many as possible and chose one that fits you properly and rides the way you think is best. If you like your bike, you'll ride it more.

One thing that annoys me about those fitness shows ( I don't watch them, just seen clips) is that they push people too hard and have them eat tofu and grass.

You don't need all that.

Find something you enjoy and you won't hate it. If you don't like running, try playing sports. If you don't like tofu, try other ways of flavoring chicken that don't include a deep fryer. ect...

Funnily enough, I always liked the idea of exercise but it didn't like me much. And then I discovered that I had chronic congestive heart failure. Well, at least it made sense.

I hate exercising. I quite like DDR though, and that it a heck of a lot of exercise to play. Was less expensive to buy a set-up for than swimming, which is the other physical activity I enjoy.

It might sound silly but it worked for me and I actually love doing it everyday.

My son got me the Nintendo Wii for Christmas and it has boxing and tennis that is actually a very good cardio workout and it's fun to do plus you get to beat the hell out of something. LOL All that punching is really good for your abs.

Like the others have said here, find something you like to do and you'll do it without dreading it.

You hafta find what works for you, you hafta find foods that you enjoy eating.

I like oatmeal, and eat plenty of it; I like eggs, and eat plenty; ditto sweet potatoes and fish. All are excellent food that come with little fat. Eggs are better than Viagra.

I wont exercise! So I substitute toil. Up and down my ladder, pulling weeds, mowing the grass, sawing logs, etc.

Okay this is gonna sound silly. I too hate (with a white hot passion!) to exercise. I can't stand doing something just for the sake of burning calories. I want something immediate to show. So I find that gardening is a good fit for me. At the end of the day I don't know if lost a pound or not, but I sd know that a huge patch of ground is turned over, raked, etc. It provides a nice visual 'look what I did' end to my day.

Any type of physical labor is good, so I recommend you find some projects around the house and start tackling them. :D

i left off the part about doing shift work, i usually have at least one double (16 hour) shift a week.

way back when... i was doing a thousand (literally) stairs a day when i was active duty. couldnt run to save my life.. but i could climb like a monkey. (i shoulda done that empire state stair climb race) i also was gaining weight constantly despite a highly restricted diet (yay galley food). i probably put on >5 pounds a year in that period.

havent done that since the 90s.

at work its not uncommon to walk +500ft from parking to my shop, depending on the shift.

WII will rock you; muscles. been there done that, damnable Punch Out.

Ok, so you said you've had your glands checked and everything is good. Any medication that might be adding lbs.?

What about taking dance lessons with the Mrs.? It's something you can do together and that's a great workout. Not to mention if you want better social skills with women, knowing how to dance is a good way to break the ice.

There are so many different kinds of dances, there must be at least one that fits your social events.

If I was my father I would just say that if you want to lose your ass, you have to get off of it.

glands are now 'in check', were way outa whack. thyroid was 10x - 30x off and T was 1/4 normal

rotating shifts and random overtime means i can only interact with the real world pseudo randomly.

sleep deprivation and weight loss

The only important piece of information is really the one the Mrs. already laid on you.

You have to WANT it. Really want it. Growth is change. And change ALWAYS involves some measure of discomfort.

I would argue the payoff is well worth it, but I am a vain and selfish creature. Intellect tells me my self worth isn't determined by whether or not women find me attractive. . . but some deeply rooted part of me disagrees no matter what my brain says.

Thus, I run. And lift. But if YOU don't require that kind of validation, and you can't find any other deep-seated need that the endeavor will feed. . . odds are, you just won't do it. (sort of the anti-Nike. And now I suddenly want to get a T-shirt with an upside down Nike logo, and the slogan 'Meh. Just don't do it.')

rotating shifts and random overtime means i can only interact with the real world pseudo randomly.

Sounds similar to my situation. I'm betting it comes with a not-so-healthy dose of chronic sleep deprivation.

When I'm sleep deprived, I have a lot of difficulty controlling what, and how much, I eat. If you insist on pursuing the whole weight loss thing, make sure you sleep. It will increase your odds of success immeasurably.

And if you're going to work out, then take up running, or set up a space at home where you can work out. Maybe you're the type to actually go to the gym, but I always found the prospect of getting into a car and going to the gym, to be a deal breaker.

Throwing on a pair of shorts and walking to my garage, though, or stepping out the front door to go for a run? That's manageable.

I wish you luck. I think if you just push through a month or two of it, it'll become enough of a habit that you'll feel bad if you -don't- work out.

As so many have said " do what you enjoy". It does not have to be calisthenics, running or any other traditional exercise. Just something that gets your heart beating faster and your muscles working harder. I am fortunate to have a full fitness center at work with group classes. I do not have the discipline to workout by myself at home. I ride a bicycle during nice weather for fun.
However, exercise cannot overcome other bad habits. If you want to lose weight you must change the diet. You can't smoke heavily or drink excessively and expect to be healthy by exercising.
Good luck with whatever you chose but do get started today.

Sounds like you are fat and lazy... Before you get all bent out of shape, it might not be your fault. I suggest you have your testosterone levels checked. Weight gain and lack of motivation are 2 signs of low testosterone.

doing the exercise you enjoy is difficult when you do not enjoy exercise.

i had my T check about a year ago. it was in the basement. like <200k when it should be 500k.

i had my thyroid checked several years ago, it was; bad. like 35 when it should be <3. i actually max a tad over 100.

but those are inline now.

be careful with things like hormones and thyroid, my experience with the medical profession is they don't know jack about them, at least not your run of the mill GP. I learned a lot working with an endocrinologist when I was in transition years ago and on HRT (long since abandoned I am afraid...), and he said the lack of knowledge was staggering, that things like hormone levels might have ranges, but 'low normal' might not mean normal at all, everyone was different I was on half the standard dose of hormones when doing female HRT, and my estrogen levels were through the roof...since reverting, I have had problems with T, and my MD told me "well, it is low, but still in normal range"..I said some unkind things under my breath, and am taking something natural that has boosted my levels. You could still be having trouble with thyroid and such, if you haven't, please see a specialist, GP's blow at this stuff....

I agree with others, find what works for you. I know only too well what long shifts and irregular shifts are like, my job has long hours and such, and since working here I have put on a lot of weight, in part because it is hard to find time to exercise. I find going to a gym more interesting, though I have a good treadmill at home, too. I love to swim, and i need to find a place where I can do that regularly.

Want to know one way that helps get motivated to actually do something? A workout partner. If your spouse wants you to get in shape, maybe you guys could workout together? I don't know too many people who don't need exercise and such, so it wouldn't hurt her, and to be able to do it together would be motivating, believe me.:) If not, a workout buddy is also good, it is you and that person pushing each other and so forth. Dancing is a pretty good form of exercise, and if you like to dance, some of the aerobics stuff they do in gyms is interesting, or jazzercise.

One note on exercise, recent studies have shown that it isn't the length of the workout it is the intensity that matters, last one was in the Lancet in the UK< and it turned conventional wisdom on its end. What that means is you don't have to spend hours in the gym, an intense workout of 30 minutes can be worth more then an hour at a lower intensity. If you like to climb, maybe something like a stair climber would work for you? Do it for 30 minutes and do it with intensity, and you might find it works.

Don't do it by cutting calories alone, that is crap. Besides the usual, staying away from sugar (or nutrasweet that is in diet soda, it is as bad as sugar, if you want a sweetener, use stevia), whole grains, lean protein, cutting calories alone is a disaster, because your body goes into famine mode, your metabolism slows down and you don't burn off what you eat...cutting calories a bit and exercising is better.

The key is it not being work, not being a dreaded thing. It is why doing it with someone else works, it is a lot more fun than being alone.

i think i logged about 2600 hours last year, 8 and 16 hour shifts.

i do need to hit an endo, see whats up w/ the multi gland failure...

I grow organic fruits and vegetables. They taste better than what I can buy, and I control what the plant is exposed to. So theyre virtually free of additives/chemicals processors use to preserve them, ripen them, etc.

If you think about it some veggies are naturally toxic outside of a narrow harvest window.

i cut out soda as a primary drink over 10 years ago.

my primary liquids are coffee (black) and water, and koolaid. :D

i recently cut out milk. i love proper vitamin D milk, but the mrs started buying 2% several years ago... so i switched. im getting concerned over hormones, as mine seem to all be failing. and milk is supposed loaded with hormones. i also want to cut out food related plastics, but thats really hard.

i eat fruits and veggies whenever i can get them in good condition.

give some thought to eliminating sugar from your diet. doing that helped me drop 25 lbs.

Keep Moving

When all is said and done I think the best exercise is walking (brisk if possible) We all try to park in the closest spot....consider parking further away from where you are going, take the stairs instead of the elevator. But most of all just walk a bit every day.

I so hear you as a geek with an aversion to exercise. Growing up, I was smaller than the other children my age, a situation made worse by the fact that I had been skipped a grade. Compared to my classmates, I was short, slow, weak, and clumsy. So, what to do...

The bad news is that the pithy "just do it" is actually great advice. But the IT is up to you. Start with something purely fun, be it buying a couple toy swords and having mock light saber battles to shooting hoops. Don't worry about Working Out at first. As you do more and it becomes a habit, you'll naturally become curious and branch out. Light saber may develop into an interest in other martial weapons for cosplay reenactment, or you might see the cute girl who jogs by your house everyday and take up jogging for a few blocks so you can watch her bootie bounce. I can tell you that the initial motivation has to be internal. If you wait for external to start, you won't.

Another factor is company. People do better exercising regularly when they have company. Find yourself a semi regular partner. A plump girl trying to lose weight is a good choice because you two can build a little sexual tension as you do your thing, and that tension will help keep you motivated.
