i'm planning on building a small website just to display my poetry, maybe with a small blog-space (though i'm shit at keeping up a blog, so that's not such an important part for consideration right now).

can anyone recommend a free, easy to use build-a-site that doesn't look too cheap and nasty?

and title suggestions?

i'm mulling over these but better suggestions are necessary and MOST welcome!

all i can think of sounds totally cheesy when i want something a little edgy, a little different

i might (get 'poetry' into the title - or 'poems') but the rest has to be sharp enough for that not to make it even cheesier.

what do you want to say? What will be the tone of the site?
even after deciding on a dot com title you have to search hoisit to see if that name is in use or available.
If you have a fair/partial understanding af HTML you can design your own site as I did. Microsoft has a program called Front Page that works well

and there's the rub - i don't really know right at the moment; i probably won't be saying much, just letting the poems talk to anyone who bothers reading them and listening to their voices. the tone . . . non-cheesy, not all urban, or flowery, or meta-this and meta-that . . . this is going to take some more thinking, but i want to start with a name for the place to kick me off (and then will likely find it's not available as you say).

i could probably tackle that, but i'm lazy and time-poor so was looking for the easier option. i might give front page a look, though, as i've dabbled with it before when doing some basic/mid pc studies.

it's all a bit strange, really, this doing a site for myself thing - the one i had before was about showcasing other poets whose work i found really interesting/exciting/fresh from around the net - some of my own were there as well, but that wasn't the drive behind the site, which was a hand-picked e-library! i knew where i was going and what feel i wanted to encompass.

for my own . . . it's all rather hazy. my own stuff goes from bright to dark, all over the place, and i'm not sure i'm interested in driving hits either - great if someone stumbles across the poems and reads them, better yet if they enjoy them, but . . . *sigh*

the main problem (as i'm seeing it) is that i'm not really sure what sort of flavour my writes are. i don't really know how others view them, or me. so a list of title names is being compiled, which will get scratched off one by one till there's just one left. and as soon as the site's made i'll probably regret the name-choice.

i'm kind of interested in The Buttery, but as i was falling asleep this afternoon for a crafty nap (an unexpected lieu-day, lazy day) the word Animasse arrived in my thoughts. just kind of sat there, all slanty like. i didn't even know if it was a word, but looked it up a short while ago. right now it's calling me simply because of the nature of its arrival - not a good reason for choosing. let us say it is shortlisted, along with

Re. website - if you have no training in the area just go facebook. The reach you can easily gain through facebook will be far greater, with much less effort, than starting your own website.

Buy a domain name if you wish and point it to your Facebook page.

Re. cheap and nasty, well that is entirely up to you. Major corporations and companies are using Facebook. Cheap and nasty will be gauged as much on visual content as your written content, initially people may likely judge on visual first. Recruit someone who is good with Photoshop in technique and design.

To be proficient in web-design along with being proficient in digital design actually takes years of training. Would you build a house without training, wire it, plumb it? Chances are anything you initially attempt will look cheap'n'nasty.

Just go Facebook - but you will still need someone proficient with Photoshop for the visuals.

Re. name - well you have to ask yourself what is the ultimate goal of this online presence, is it just like a private diary that you invite people to or would you like people with similar interests to find you via a Internet search? If Internet search is important then the words you use in the title become very important. There are a whole lot of other factors that will influence whether you are found on a Internet search. This also applies if you choose to use Facebook. There are no instant solutions.

My advice is to work out your goals and ambitions for this on-line presence then get advice from a professional. Meanwhile, you can start with Facebook, get your domain name - point it to the Facebook page and progress from there.

If your poetry is going to be more adult in content - then go Tumblr. All the above advice still applies.

i'm not entirely a novice as i used to run my own writing/arts website some years back, but it was my now-ex who built it. and dismantled it. i've picked up a little from watching him and from my own experiments, so would find a template site most likely rather than facebooking - i'm not really a facebook fan, having an account but almost never venturing there.

the reason this is taking some time is down to my attempts to work out the 'goals and ambitions'. this isn't about selling the poetry or, even, myself - it's really more just getting the writing nicely presented and floating out there. i'm not in any rush about getting published - been there, done that, on a low-key scale; my last site was more about promoting other people and their talents . . . i understood its purpose and where i wanted to take it. right now, for me, i'm simply not yet sure. i'll have to see what appeals, ultimately. i have even considered restarting what i began, a sort of online library for the happy traveler, but don't think i have the time to give it the attention it'd require.

as i said, it's all fluid right now. think i have to change the font/text size for the poems on the poem page, and see if i can rearrange the page listing across the top. either way, it's a start.

any thoughts? ideas? want to get all my pages in a drop down menu if possible, and should i get each page password protected to prevent tampering or is it really not worth bothering?

nah, it's supposed to be easy yet it took hours as i fumbled my way through. getting the hang of where stuff is and where i can move it to and stuff - all trial and error.

best of all, though, doesn't cost a penny. since i'm having to replace my newly-deceased freezer, that kind of counts right now
