The Last Thing You Thought...

LT: And I woke up to this??? This girl has serious issues and needs rehab. Sometimes it takes seeing someone at rock bottom for you to appreciate how strong you are.

I forgot how disgusting and insensitive some on the GB can be.

I think I've literally only been there by accident.

But, it's the internet. Anonymity gives people the freedom to say whatever disgusting and terrible thing they can think of. It's not as if there are real people on the other side of the screen, right?

Well, when you get people choosing names like "HotCockMan" and "CumShooter" etc. (names I have made up because I am too lazy to go find the actual names), one can only assume that they have no actual understanding of sex in the first place.

Maybe he has a condition that makes his cock hotter than normal, and he's just looking for some support for sufferers of the same affliction.

I am at work. I have four more hours of screaming kidlets, rude guests and smiling prettily while wishing I could chop off their heads...

I can do this.

I can.

I don't WANT to.

Don't say that. you'll be next.

Baby girl~ I have been called~
nigger, dyke, fag hag, cunt, stupid, a relative of Little Richard, Little Richard's TWIN...

etc. etc...

I have had my FB hacked, my yahoo hacked , my Lit account hacked.

*shrugs*

I have told people my address, my phone numbers and invited them to my home for a face to face...

RIGHT HERE on LIT.

Trust me...I have dealt with it...

*shrugs*

Watch the video. Its a horror story.

I've got it in my favorites to watch later. I'm still hoping to get a little more sleep, and I feel like white-hot rage is probably not going to help that any.

There is also this gem:

The ongoing dispute about sexism in the secular community has been settled at last by one incredibly insightful post.

Atheism is a ‘guy thing,’ I would say, like needlepoint is a ‘girl thing.’

We don’t have to consider why the sexes fall (or are pushed) into these particular roles; they just are. And with that simple argument, we’re done. By golly, we ought to make the guy who said it some kind of leader of the atheist movement. We wouldn’t want to have him wasting his time on things like needlepoint, you know.

Oh you silly girls and your crafty things, leave it to the men to discuss the intellectual stuff!

I know babyboi, it can be a fucking horror out there.
hugs

I have discovered that most people stop the MOMENT you say...

this is where I live, this is where I work...

you wanna come hurt me, come on. I will be waiting...

along with my family and all the country boys I can gather before you show up.

(also, I wanna say that when i refer to 'Elevatorgate', I'm talking strictly about the event, her initial response, and the outpouring of misogyny immediately following...I am NOT talking about all the shit that followed because I simply don't know enough about it, and I'm not sure I care)

Yeah, I didn't follow it all that closely after the initial bits, either.

I don't generally read Greta Christina or Skeptchick (Skepchick?), but mostly because I barely keep up with the three I do read, and I just happened upon them first.

Well, and Jerry Coyne's WEIT blog was because I read the book it's named after.

But yeah, it was mostly PZ's reporting on it on Pharyngula that I know about it from.

LT ~ Ouch.

FLT ~ Actually, that was slightly more than just ouch. :(

ALT ~ Maybe some painkillers would be a good idea.

And PZ's perspective is, well, his perspective. What little I've read makes it sound like there was an honest conflict, which means you have to read a LOT of different people and stories to try and figure out what happened and which side (if either) you come down on.

Indeed.

And there's no real way to know for sure, in the end you just have to take people's words for it.

But, really, it shouldn't be necessary in the first place. Just leave people alone. Try to be at least a little aware of what the hell you're doing. It's not hard.

Well, the later part really is
"Something"
"Disagree"
"Yeah well, I'm calling you out"
"NOT COOL!"
"I don't like that"
"Tough. DOn't listen."
etc.
It became an internal, social issue.

HOWEVER, the fact that her complaint turned into a thing at all is pathetic.
She didn't ask for the guy to be punished, kicked out of the conference, reveal his name, or anything at all.
She said 'Hey, this behavior is likely to make women uncomfortable. You might want to not do that.'

Yeah, but she has a vagina, so complaining is not allowed.

And then, some conferences started having stated anti-harassment policies, and that somehow became a thing, because, you know, we want to still be able to harass people, I guess!

It amazes me that there are guys out there who think that the only way to hit on a woman is to completely violate her personal space (physical and psychological). I have been hit on by guys a number of times, and many of them do so politely, respectfully, and in a sexy way (not for me, mind you...).
If you think that not being able to harass a woman will keep you from getting laid, maybe you need to rethink your strategy

Because they're a man, and thus entitled to it. And any woman that rejects them is either a lesbian (obviously used derisively in their minds, unless said lesbian is letting said guy watch them when another lesbian, in which case it instantly becomes okay!), or a stuck-up bitch. Because who could possibly not want to fuck them? It's incomprehensible!

More than a few times I've had to play fake boyfriend to friends of mine when out, because it's just easier for them to be on my arm than it is to fend off people who apparently forgot to evolve past apes.

And yet, never once have I needed one of my friends to act like they're with me. Crazy.

I assume you've read about the whole "OMG THERE ARE GIRLS AT THE CON AND I DON'T THINK THEY ARE REAL GEEKS" outrage?

Yeah, I believe so.

At least this stuff gets out there now. It's not as if it's a new phenomenon, but thanks to the internet the level of exposure of it, is. And, like any fungus, I think the more a light is shined on this kind of behavior, the less it will happen. I hope, at least.

I used to be called the "pitbull" when out friends because they would get hit on, and quite rudely, by guys (me being a larger woman, it did not happen to as often, and quite honestly, my "don't fuck with me" attitude probably contributed to it too)... but my friends were not quite as.. well, they were alot more willowy than me, and did not have that particular attitude, so yeah, they would get hit on, touched, groped, by random guys, those same guys SB so aptly describes. Well, I was the pitbull, and had no problem telling them to fuck off, get lost, whatever.

SB, it would have been great to have You there to help out, that's for sure.. LMAO...

Given that we were partying in Boston, it never surprised me in the least bit when the rude, obnoxious guys just came out of the woodwork. They certainly outnumbered the nice guys....
