When I Was a Kid....

WIWAK I used my imagination more than my toys.

*stalk*

*stalk all you like, I truly enjoy your company!

I watched a little girl at the market yesterday; she was sitting in the seat of a shopping chart, playing with two little toys. You could see from the way she was playing that the front of the cart was some sort of elaborate amusement park for her little toys. What a joy to witness that spark of imagination. It was truly a moment of "happy" to watch her play!

Seeing kids play like that reminds me that the younger generation might not be as far gone as I once thought. I help mine play like that as often as possible. Books, open ended toys, and lots of play time helps foster their imaginations.

*I enjoy yours as well*

WIWAK we played in the rain until our teeth were chattering!

WIWAK, we had a mantel clock that had to be wound with a key.

WIWAK we had one particular ornament that my brothers and I used to fight over to see who could put it on the tree. I have that ornament now and my brothers are always trying to steal it from me.

That's funny, HeartlessB! I can remember doing the same kind of thing with my brothers! The favorite ornament was a black Christmas ball, because it was just so weird to have a black ball.....interpret that however you wish!

WIWAK, you bought the TOPS baseball package of gum to see the player cards and trade them. Those that weren't trade-worthy became the noise makers for the spokes of your rear tire on your bike using clothes pins....

WIWAK we made green and red paper chain garland for the tree. Anybody else remember doing that? p.s. That was before glue sticks, too...we used rubber cement or that awful mucilage!

WIWAK when you called a company you got a switchboard operator who directed your call. Not a happy computer voice. For all the automation that companies have gone through it sure doesn't increase customer satisfaction.

WIWAK my best ever Christmas gift was a bike. It meant a freedom go where I wanted and explore the world. I logged quite a few miles on that old friend.

WIWAK, I did not have all this free porn to look at. I had to go the local convenience store to buy it!

WIWAK you could get bubblegum for a penny at the local market (which we walked to by ourselves - won't let my kids go around the block now!)

WIWAK-- and standing in line to tell Santa what I wanted for Christmas, there were NEVER adults passing by and in a loud officious voice stating "There is NO Santa Claus"..... sadly today that occurs.

WIWAK I rode my bike everywhere and only came home when the street lights came on. I spent hours exploring the "woods", building forts, and going to the local gas station to buy goodies and never once felt unsafe. I wish it could be the same for my kids.

WIWAK we went over to the family member's house that had cable to watch A Christmas Story with the other kids in my family and the adults drank spiked egg nog and played cards...Also, one cousin would bust out a video copy of Eddie Murphy's Delirious or Raw or Richard Pryor in Vegas...

Oh, and WIWAK, Ralphie was the man...

Ralphie's still the man, SL!! :)

WIWAK, there were three holiday traditions involving my mom.

1. She would ALWAYS sneak into the room with the tree and try to sneak a peek at her presents by ripping a small hole in the corner of the wrapper and blowing into it to see,

2. She would always want the cranberry jelly from can so she could see the contours of the lines left by the can,

3. She would always put on, "It's a Wonderful Life" and cry at the ending...
