What happened to all of the doom and gloom economic threads?

Great editorial in the NY Times today...

NY Times: The Austerity Trap

The lesson that should be learned from Greece is that its fiscal mess has been made far worse by severe budget cuts.

..what has been clear to just about everyone except pro-austerity German officials and deficit-crazed Republican politicians: deep government budget cuts at a time of economic weakness are counterproductive, complicating, if not ruining, the chances for economic growth.

RDS believes that losing less jobs is good news.

I thought I read that the recession ended in 2009.

Please don't put words in my mouth or ascribe positions to me. That's AJ's job.

I realize you've likely never opened an Economics textbook, but recovering from a recession, especially the largest recession in the past 60 or so years, is not as simple as declaring "it's over" and everything immediately is sunshine 'n rainbows.

Complicating this recovery has been the unofficial Republican position of "Better America fail than that nigger succeed", where scorched-earth filibusters have prevented meaningful legislation from being passed. It's all part of the new Republican policy of "party first, country second".

Let me give you an imperfect analogy:

Remember when your mother used to suck off sailors in back alleys to fund her crack habit? And when they weren't looking she'd try and steal their wallets? Every now and then, she'd get caught and beaten and every so often she'd get stabbed?

Well, the attack would have eventually ended, but the recovery time was often lengthy. (Remember how long those stays in foster care could be?)

USA Today: Claims for unemployment aid fall to 369,000

The number of first-time claims for unemployment benefits fell 23,000 to a seasonally adjusted 369,000 the week ended Oct. 20, reflecting an improving labor market .

In a separate report, the government said orders for long-lasting U.S. manufactured goods surged 9.9% in September by the largest amount in nearly three years.

Time for your nap.

You're going to psychopathic mode.

Wasn't it 2009 when UD declared his recovery was in progress?

I did, and so did a lot of others, including "The Economist"

"THE American recession is over. In the summer of 2009 real GDP and industrial production hit bottom and resumed growth, and expansion in both measures strengthened as the year ended. Industrial production has continued to grow in early 2010 as, in all likelihood, has output. By the end of the current quarter the American economy may have returned to its pre-recession peak in real GDP."

So, only 369,000 lost their jobs last week, Great news!! How long will it be before we start hiring again????

According to these numbers there's net hiring now. When the new jobless claims are under 400k or so there's typically hiring going on. Even if there was 4% unemployment we still might have a few hundred thousand new jobless claims.

I suspect you and Garbage don't know how to read this figure.

Yawn.

The Democrats controlled both branches of government for the last two years of the Bush administration and the first two years of the Obama administration. If they had spent time acting in the economic interests of the United States instead of against it, a real recovery might be in progress. Instead they wasted the time sowing uncertainty, raising taxes, and saddling the economy with a monstrous health care program the American people didn't want and their efforts continue to pay economic "dividuds" to this day.

Hey Grandpa, there are 3 branches of government.

Raising taxes? Here I thought they continued the Bush tax cuts and cut the payroll tax.

If Republicans had control they would have had the US default on the debt ceiling leading to an immediate fiscal crisis, a second recession, and probably four degrees of credit downgrades. After all, it was only because of the sequestration agreement that default did not occur. And now you're turning around and faulting Democrats for sequestration and your candidate is lying calling it part of Obama's financial plan.

If you want to talk about uncertainty, look no further than the Republican party, which views default as a legitimate and doable financial plan for America.

Vetteman raises the bar for ignorance on a daily basis.

Republicans saw their paychecks increase because of Obama but will look you in the eye and say it never happened. Even on payday when they're looking at their pay stub with more money on it, they'll deny deny deny.
