Atlanta Symphony Rejects Two High School Choruses Because They‘re Not ’Racially Diverse Enough’

Two high school choruses will not be performing with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra (ASO) this year because they’re not “racially-diverse enough,” Fox News reports.

Apparently, it’s more important that you look like you just came from the set of “Glee” than it is to, you know, have actual talent.

“This year, the schools were informed by symphony officials that their choruses are not diverse enough, and that the symphony would be inviting a third, more diverse chorus [emphasis added],” said Cobb County Schools spokesman Jay Dillon.

Unsurprisingly, some Marietta, Ga., residents believe the symphony’s decision to turn away both Walton and Lassiter High School is discriminatory.

“I think it’s sad,” one resident, Shar Nicholson, told WSBTV.com. “I think if they have the talent and the desire they should be given the opportunity.”

Atlanta Symphony Orchestra President Stanley Romanstein argues that it’s one of the goals of the organization to “reflect the diversity of Atlanta,” adding that he is surprised at the outcry.

“It’s an interesting misunderstanding,” he said.

According to Romanstein, chorus directors at both Walton and Lassiter were “understanding” when they were told about the symphony’s decision two years ago.

Still, the fact that the symphony based its decision on physical appearance rather than merit has rubbed more than a few people the wrong way.

“It’s not necessarily fair to the students at all,” Cobb County resident Vashon Ramsey told WSBTV.com. “They should be allowed to perform regardless.”

But Romanstein stands by the ASO’s decision.

“There are at least 12 very talented high school choirs in Atlanta,” Romanstein said. “We gave Lassiter and Walton choirs an opportunity to perform for four consecutive years, and they were marvelous. We think it’s time to give other Atlanta high school choirs, who are very skilled and deserving, their chance to perform with the ASO as well.”

Both high schools were offered a chance to bring a select group of their choruses to perform with the symphony but both turned down the offer.

“Because the full choruses would not be able to perform with the symphony, both Lassiter and Walton have declined to participate this year,” said Dillon

Pompous Circumstance – The Arbitrary Discriminations of The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra

Here is a typical example of unmasked progressivity running amok. In Atlanta Georgia the symphony orchestra has decided not to allow the previous high schools choruses to perform with them because they are not “racially diverse enough” to warrant participation. Apparently that means they are demographically “too white”.

However, in the strangest, well, not really strange – more like typical, fashion the Symphony itself refuses to self-describe their own diversity. So, after reading this article, well, actually after reading the comment from the “Director of Communications“, I just had to go look at the ethnic makeup of the Symphony itself.

“It is against our policy to share the race and/or ethnicity of our musicians, so I am unable to share that information.”

Subsequently a review of the entire orchestra make up, including conductors, shows they have one, yes one, black person (Brass Section – Stephen Wilson). Yup, as expected, the hypocritical slips of the pontificating musical progs are showing.

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — After a four-year partnership, two suburban Cobb County high school choruses will not be performing with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra [ASO] this coming fall.

That’s because they’ve been told they are not racially diverse enough.

The Walton High School Chorus has received many honors and performed all over the world. So, too, has the Lassiter High School Chorus. But they won’t be back with the ASO for a joint holiday concert this coming December.

11Alive was first alerted to the change by e-mails from some angry parents, none of whom would go on camera. But a spokesperson for the Cobb County School District confirmed the breakup.

In a response to an 11Alive e-mail, school system communications director Jay Dillon wrote that “the schools were informed by Symphony officials that their choruses are not diverse enough, and that the Symphony would be inviting a third, more diverse chorus.”

Dillon said Walton and Lassiter were still welcome to participate but, “because of limited space, only a portion of the Lassiter and Walton choruses would therefore be able to attend.”

He added that the schools chose not to leave any chorus members behind and “would not be able to perform with the Symphony.” Dillon also wrote, “Cobb County School District choral programs are open to all students, and participation is determined on the basis of merit alone.”

The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra sent us a written reply from marketing VP Charlie Wade.

“We’ve been thrilled with the quality and performance of Lassiter and Walton choruses for four straight years; they are terrific,” Wade wrote. “But we felt it was simply time to let another set of kids participate.”

He said Atlanta’s Grady High School chorus had been added.

Meanwhile, we also asked about the racial diversity of the ASO itself.

A 2008 study by the League of American Orchestras found that 87% of musicians in U.S. symphonies are white.

But Melissa A.E. Sanders, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra’s senior director of communications, wrote, “It is against our policy to share the race and/or ethnicity of our musicians, so I am unable to share that information.” (read more)

This is what annoys me about the pontifications of the progs. This same prog symphony who determines the schools ability to participate, based on their arbitrary view of the diversity, are themselves less diverse than the chorus they would disingenuously discriminate against.

A typically contrarian example of how ”what is good for me is not good for thee”. Every single aspect of prog life is fraught with these hypocritical positions; all of them.

ATL Symphony Musicians Offer to Perform for Free With Choral Groups

The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Players’ Association has sat by in dismay for the past several days observing the ASO management’s disintegrating relations with Lassiter, Walton, and Grady High Schools, and the whole community.

As musicians who love to play with the talented choruses at these schools, we want to help resolve these ongoing issues.

To that end, the Musicians are making the following offer to Lassiter High School, Grady High School, and Walton High School: We, the ATL Symphony Musicians, will perform for free with the Lassiter, Walton, and Grady choral groups at their schools. Each school can use these performances as fundraisers and keep all of the proceeds for their benefit.

Actually, I currently reside in Texas, but was born and bread in Obamaland, Illinois, Chicago the windy city. Of course if the politicians kept their mouths shut we would have a calm day. Once in awhile.

The PICS are UP there ^^^

PLUS

if they said its NOT their POLICY to disclose their RACIAL MAKEUP

you know what that means

I only look at the pictures when I read the articles in Playboy.

And why is racial makeup so important to you?

Personally, I could care less. After all this time on this world it's sad that the color of a persons skin still matters to some people.

Yeah, had to get away from the oppressive taxation and the dried up like a prune job market.

I liked the windfall profits tax they put on Casinos...

Really increased business on this side o' the big muddy...

Hell they moved a Casino from KC to Cape just to take advantage of Chicago...

*sniff* *sniff* Nothing like a remake of Casino only with the BIG EVIL CORPORATIONS taking the place of the KC-Chicago mafia...

After 50 year or so of drama in Chicago, I pay no attention to what goes on up there. Although it would sadden me if it fell into Lake Michigan as my grandchildren still live up there.

I'm sure it's already been stated, but I just want to express the shock I felt in learning that Georgia has any symphonies.

Georgia doesn't, Atlanta does. Atlanta is not really representative of Georgia and so many northerners have moved there that it's not really a southern town anymore. Lived there for thirteen years.

If I blow it will Pookie come, or did she get tired of defending rising premiums?

We were on the river tour and the guide was praising the river and I asked him when we would get out of this diversion ditch and onto the river...

He did not find that funny.
