The U.S. government's only facility for handling, processing and storing weapons-grade uranium has been temporarily shut after anti-nuclear activists, including an 82-year-old nun, breached security fences, government officials said on Thursday.

WSI Oak Ridge, the contractor responsible for protecting the facility at Oak Ridge, Tenn., is owned by the international security firm G4S, which was at the center of a dispute over security at the London Olympic Games.

Last time I was that way, Y-12 had some tough security.

And was WELL off the beaten path. Just a little sign sitting there to mark the road.

I don't see how you can't find it I drive I 40 you can't miss the exits are the signs to the dam thing.

That may be true, and I wonder who the idiot was that thought putting those signs up was a good idea?

I used to wander up that way from Lenoir City on state 95 maybe 10 years ago. Just little white signs on the road.

Off 95, just take Bear Creek Road.....

Pretty much. My first wife was born and raised there and her father worked there.

They used to leave the Melton Valley Road gate open off 95. Was quicker to get to work at X-10 instead of going through the secure gate.

That's the government for you let's put a sign up to something the public doesn't need know about.

X-10, another blast from the past. That was under Thiokol wasn't it? Or am I confused?

Last time I was there I went to the mall. 50% empty and most of the rest selling some sort of "Johnson" T-shirt. I hope things have changed, but it wasn't looking good.

If an 82-year-old nun was able to breach security this plant, then this facility is highly insecure.

It's only been about 8 - 9 years since I was there, last. The Warehouse Bar was gone. The mall was still half empty. Bechtel-Jacobs was the site contractor and prior to them, everyone worked for Lookheed-Martin.
