I was watching "Political Animals" last night and I thought it was pretty good. But at the end Sigourney Weaver's character said something like this:

"I love elephants. They're a matriarchal society and as soon as a male hits puberty, they kick it the hell out of the herd."

Both female characters in the scene thought it was absolutely hilarious and I felt compelled to clarify to my husband that that crap isn't funny. He smiled and said something like "Everyone knows we're all evil."

I'm just ashamed of Sigourney Weaver sounding like someone from my high school that I quietly put on ignore because they post/say ignorant crap.

Not okay, Sigourney!

Anyway, she's pretty awesome otherwise and it's just a script, but it looked like watching "Mad Men" in reverse. It's not where we should be headed.

But I'm not really alone and I'm part of a society that has whiplashed its way into making the casual assumption that men are stereotypically destructive and we're supposed to laugh about it.

Sure, if it was a joke about one guy...but all of them?

Oh. Me. I'm not a feminist. I don't believe women are morally or spiritually superior to men in any way. I find the assumption offensive. Guess I'm a humanist and I'm free to despise or approve of each human on a case by case basis.

Sounds pretty much like what I've heard women say in the company of other women that leaves me the only one not laughing and then I defend the guys and then I just don't talk to those women again.

Thanks. I just don't see a lot of defense of men. My husband won't defend himself, so it's probably not a big issue, I guess I'm just making it more of an issue because I think men can't do it for themselves any more without looking like they're fighting with a girl.

I define feminism as the belief that women should have an equal playing field, and they don't. That simple.

I have only exchanged several posts with your husband as long as I have been here. And I do not recall what those were about.

That's cool. But then it's humanism, equal. Feminism is promoting the female point of view, at least in practice.

For instance, if we're talking equality, if females have full control over reproductive rights, males should have full control over economic rights, i.e., if a woman is the only one who can choose whether or not she has birth control or a baby, a male should be able to sign a legal release as to whether or not he wants to support a baby. That's my idea anyway. That seems fair.

I'm all for even. I'm not accusing you of anything, I'm accusing the writers of the show in charge of making Sigourney Weaver look the way she looks of something.

I'm only going to get worked up over it to the extent that I start a thread.

He's never alone in the company of women in the way I am, where I'm expected to laugh along and think that bashing guys is fun.

He has to do the same in the company of guys, many of whom assume he's in on the joke in the same way that women assume I'm in on the joke.

It's the "collusion" aspect of it that I find distasteful.

I think the substance of the argument to be important. I don't think degrading the other side is of any value.

I don't think this example is feminism. I think it's a stereotypical "man hating" comment.

I struggle almost every day with being a woman in charge of a large group of men, I've been physically hurt, emotionally bashed and mentally exhausted by this group and the common refrain is "You're just a man hater". No, I'm not. I appreciate and genuinely like men. I enjoy how we can usually get upset with one another, yell it out and have a good relationship after that.

In my circle of friends it is sometimes laughed about, throwing the men off the island but it's purely a joke and it always slips back in to talking about our various husbands or boyfriends and how great they can be. It is not much different than a "woman, make me a sammich" joke.
