...and is scheduled to arrive in August, taking up position with the 3 Carrier Strike Groups already in place in the waters off Iran, led by the USS Enterprise (on her last mission before retirement), the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower and the USS Abraham Lincoln.

The United States Navy possess 11 aircraft carriers. It has been written that the US has never deployed 4 of its Carrier Strike Groups to the same vicinity before...

So, would our first Jewish President really attack Iran prior to the election?

Would this hurt or help his re-election chances?

I don't think the Ike is off of Iran. Could be wrong.
And really, so what? Somebody has the balls to take on even one CSG then more power to them. Should be fun to watch.

I can imagine a more sympathetic scenario to his reelection chances might be more like the defensive one his fellow Democrat President pulled just 3 months before election day 1964...

...the infamous Gulf of Tonkin incidents occurred on August 2 and August 4 of that year.

After the North Vietnamese attacked our gathered forces in the Gulf off of the shore of Vietnam, President Johnson went to Congress to get the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution passed - which it easily did. That resolution, in wiki words, "served as Johnson's legal justification for deploying U.S. conventional forces and the commencement of open warfare against North Vietnam."

Thus began one of the blackest eyes ever in American history: the war in Vietnam...

...3 months later Johnson trounced Republican nominee Barry Goldwater by 61.1% to 38.5% to win his only elected term as President (he was VP when Kennedy was offed, and his 4 years in Office after the Vietnam War began made him voluntarily decline to seek reelection in '68).

wiki lists the American toll of the war in Vietnam thusly:

Casualties as of 19 May 2012:

58,282 KIA or non-combat deaths (including the missing & deaths in captivity)

303,644 WIA (including 153,303 who required hospitalization and 150,341 who didn't)

1,664 MIA (originally 2,646)

725-779 POW (660 freed (28 escaped), (65-119 died in captivity)

I've read an Admiral state that the Twelvers are definitely more than capable enough to completely shut the Straight off to all traffic...

...but that it definitely wouldn't last very long at all. :D

Actually in May of 1972 the Unites States had six aircraft carriers on Yankee Station conducting the Lineback air strikes against North Vietnam.

Thanks for the correction.

I wonder if there are any broads using the urinals on that aircraft carrier right now.

Just one is formidable.

Four is terrifying.

Though it is precautionary and Iran is blustering, talking shit, it is a guarantee they are shitting themselves because this is exactly what we done in the past. Place overwhelming firepower in a location for "precautionary measures" then carpet bomb every military installation they have.

From what I hear things in Iran are looking ugly. Either Iran must submit to the infidels soon or face a revolt or pick a fight. It will be interesting to see how this turns out.

I understand that the Stennis will do a training cruise for the month of October and then, deployed for 6 months just after Christmas.

Rising tensions

The Pentagon also announced Monday that it is sending the aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis to the Persian Gulf region – four months earlier than previously scheduled. The Stennis strike group, which also includes the Aegis guided-missile cruiser USS Mobile Bay and some 5,500 sailors, will also be on an eight month deployment – twice as long as the group was originally scheduled to be deployed.

This major shift in the Stennis deployment is a response to the steadily rising tensions over Iran's nuclear program, Iran's threat to shut down the Strait of Hormuz over tighter international sanctions, and the possibility that Israel may launch preemptive airstrikes against Iran's nuclear facility.

Thanks to the heads-up provided by da 'bear in his thread of a USNS firing death upon aggressors in the Persian Gulf...
