It was only illegal during The Commonwealth ruled by Oliver Cromwell.

Some of the citizens of Canterbury were arrested and charged with celebrating Christmas against the law. The Canterbury jury refused to find the accused guilty. Cromwell sent some of his army to intimidate the jury. They still refused to find the defendants guilty even when the jury were thrown in jail.

The other citizens of Canterbury broke open the jail, released the jury and the original defendants and attacked the soldiers. When more soldiers arrived, the jurors and the defendants were 'missing'.

No one was convicted of celebrating Christmas, but the City of Canterbury was fined for civic disobedience.

The case is one of those supporting the right of a jury to decide without outside interference.

PS Christmas in Norwich, particularly if you find the events advertised in the local media, is likely to be more enjoyable than in London. You could walk to most things in Norwich. London is too large to enjoy at Christmas and public transport might be erratic.

Don't drive in London unless you have to. Apart from the congestion, and the congestion charge the traffic drives on the wrong side of the road. Trying to find somewhere to park close to where you want to go would either be frustrating or expensive. Take public transport or a black cab.

There are more offensive T-Shirts than that to be seen on the streets of London. In parts of London, yes, they might buy you a drink but in the next street you could be mugged.

If you want to see English people celebrating Christmas, Norwich is more likely. In London? It's just another festival along with Diwali, Ramadan and the whatever sport is right for the season.

At present it's tennis at Wimbledon, with over-priced strawberries, rain always forecast and yet another British hope losing...
