Top Secret!

I am trying to understand what is so hard about tracking it. When we went to an electronic payment, paperless food stamp system, wasn't one of the main reasons to keep track of how the food stamps are spent? The cards have accounts, right? And each account has a list of transactions, correct?

Tom Steinhauser makes a good point though.

Nothing hard about it, the Feds just don't want you to know what kind of luxury items are being bought with their tax money.

Yep. I agree. We put the Feds (USDA) in their position, we should be the ones that know wtf happens to our tax dollars. And the crap in that article about the USDA not knowing what type of stuff the stamps buy is stupidity at its' finest. I mean, they have universal bar codes and the benefit cards info at their disposal.

I grew up poor but never once did my mom use welfare and was very proud of that. We lived in Philly and used public transit. My mom worked as a seamstress in my grandfathers tailoring shop.

My mom would get so mad when we would be at the grocery store and the lady in front of us would buy shrimp and steak with food stamps while we bought hot dogs and hamburger with cash. Then she would see them climb into their new Cadillac and drive away.

The fact that 99.9 percent of the time the person was black is not material to my story.

I see it all the time in Kroger's.

I grew up poor as well, be we had not public transportation. We either walked or drove a crappy old car whenever we could get it to run, unless Dad was home with his truck. My mother did odd jobs at home, sometimes she babysat.

Oh, we definitely qualified for welfare for a few years, but refused to do so.

Was when I was barely 8. A couple on welfare was in front of us with all these expensive meats, ice cream, and lots of candy. And no kids with them. My brother and I were drooling and dreaming about that stuff in front of us. The couple was nicely dressed to the tilt, and paid for their food with food stamps. We were counting coins from a penny jar to pay for our bread and milk. The woman turned to my mother and told her that her man needed to "gets some better clothes for his ho".. The man picked up one of the steaks, dangling it in front of me because I was drooling over it. He said if I worked hard enough, I could afford one of those some day. They drove off in a new Lincoln Continental. My mother was in tears the rest of the day.

I do not think the food prices are effected. I think there is still a card fee though. Not sure about the card fee.

Unless we impose rationing on everybody under a certain income level, there's no system that would satisfy the RWCJ club. As soon as you tell people that they can use food stamps to buy saltines but not Ritz crackers, the RWCJ will whine about unfair business practices and demand subsidies for Ritz crackers.

Did you notice there are also fines for states that reveal the info.

No, I didn't. There a lot of things about this that do not seem right. Like, why would a local government have to pay JP Morgan to get the information? Why would this 'National Association of Convenience Store Operators' group have to lobby so stores would be approved to accept food stamps?

The Senate and the House should propose and approve a bill mandating the USDA release the numbers and provide accountability for where the money is going. This is something that should have been resolved long ago and not even be an issue.

Yet another fine example of why this country is so badly in debt at the taxpayers' expense.

What do you think people are buying with food stamps?

i'm gonna guess they're buying food, because that's kinda all you can buy with them.

It is more about what happens to the money once it is spent, than what can be bought with food stamps. You cannot get tobacco or alcohol products with them anymore. Unless, of course, someone has found away around that again.

That would be my guess. I'm sure someone will find out that .000001% bought lobster and caviar with them and that will mean the whole system is fucked.

hey, if some jackass wants to waste their foodstamps on expensive shit i don't really care. they'll suffer for it when they run out of money and are stuck eating ramen for a week.

Either way you look at this, it boils down to being yet another legalized Federal Government racketeering scam.

Yes some people abuse the system, and I'm sure some people still sell their food stamps. But there is no way to buy anything but food, with food stamps.

This is just like drug testing for welfare recipients. It sounds good and it feel right, but it's not cost effective to the state, which you think would be paramount.

You can't sell food stamps anymore because there are no food stamps. It's all on debit cards now. I suppose one could lend out the debit card and PIN but that'd be dumb even for someone who sells food stamps.
