If you do the crime, you do the time. Everyone is treated fairly, as I have seen in the courts firsthand. If they represent the largest number of offenders, what does that say about them? No one here told them to quit school, join a gang, commit crimes. If they represent a larger number than other races, who's to blame? We have Asian gangs, as well as Indian gangs, but we have far less in the way of drive-by's and other gang related activities. Guns might be the way to go there in the States, but not here.

We just passed new laws regarding gangs and recruitment of new members. We're sick of the Americanisation of our youth who want to act like assholes from the 'hoods' in the States.

As for officers, we have many of every race on the streets and they don't have to look any farther than the neighbourhoods where ALL the little gangbangers hang out to find them. They give the whole black race a bad name and the black community is the biggest group that wants them off the streets. They were the biggest proponents of the latest gang laws passed. Imagine that.

There's a possibility of anything anywhere, isn't there? As a whole, Canada has the basis down, but the attitudes of immigrants is hard to control. Maybe we should be giving newcomers a debriefing and attitude adjustment, before becoming citizens. Bring your nationality, leave your bullshit at home, should be posted in the Immigration offices, maybe

I agree with Lance's first comment about women in Canada. I've held the door open for women here and almost always you're met with a "thank you" or a smile. The rare time a women gives me a look or (I think once) has said something derogatory, I ignored it. Maybe she's had a bad day or maybe she's just a jerk.
I've had young women hold the door for me, especially when I'm struggling to guide one of my kids through an entrance. I say thank you. As a guy, I pride myself on my inherent laziness.
However, my own experience of about forty years in the GTA has shown me that racism does exist there. It is true that you can live a long time in the GTA and never see it and others have said exactly that to me. But I have seen it and I have been told about it by people who have experienced it.
On an individual basis, I've seen racism in every ethnic group. But it's usually of the type: "oh, you can't trust those people, but Joe next door he's an average guy like me and isn't like the ones we see on the news." It's not common, but it's there.
As for the cops...well, GTA cops have done racial profiling, age profiling, gender profiling, etc for as long as I can remember. They used to be pretty bad that way and I 'think' they're more fair now. There was a local TV reporter who admitted he'd been pulled over repeatedly and questioned because he was "acting suspicious". He was a young black man. Through the 90s, if you were a young black guy driving a decent car you were far more likely to get pulled over by the police than a young white guy or young asian driving a decent car.
Lance is correct about the Toronto cops being multicultural. And there are a lot of events and occurrences in the GTA that could have gone south, but went well because the cops and civilians all behaved themselves. I doubt Pinball Clemens ever got pulled over except to be asked for an autograph.
