I wrote and submitted my first story. I was pleased to see that it is popular. But it's definitely not "HOT". So, I decided to read some of the hot stories. The difference between their stories and mine? They actually flushed out the characters, scenery and general ambiance. Who would have thought that people wanted a good story? lol I am saying this all in fun. I need to work on giving my little stories more flesh than bone!!

Having said all that, it is strange to have your sexual fantasies voted on and critiqued.

Even in erotica, the best stories are those with a plot and a rich, deep world in which the reader can immerse themselves. That way the payoff moments are all the greater.

Yes, that is true I suppose. I tend to skip past it all and get to the dirty parts. lol. I am cheap I guess. I need to look at that. Anyway, I do appreciate the efforts to lay the story out. I have a hard time reading online I think. Do people print these stories out first I wonder?

I would imagine some do and some don't print the stories out.

In terms of skipping past parts of the story, I think the key is to write it in a way that it's easy to keep reading. For example, avoid huge blocks of text. Once you start giving huge blocks of text describing something, it becomes very easy to skip over that.

Oh yeah I learned that part fast. My first submission was rejected because it wasn't broken up enough. Apparently people don't like to masturbate to blocks of text.

A good plot and...

believable characters I believe are the key, but I would guard against too much extraneous details concerning dress or environment unless they are crucial to the story.

I've had the same sort of experience.

When I posted my first story a couple years ago I had a different purpose than for later stories. One difference we have: I don't write about specific sexual fantasies. I just wanted to find an original premise for the story (that later grew into a series of stories), and I settled on writing stories about people who end up in sexual situations as the result of a wager. I've had a general interest in that type of story, but, as a reader, finding ones that are premised well is a real rarity. So, I was very careful to root the story in reality: real characters, in settings and situations that are plausible.

As I wrote that first story (it has more sexual 'action' than any of the stories that follow it) I actually found myself getting impatient and cranky with having to write the sexual interaction parts of the story.

In continuing to write similarly-premised stories, I found myself much more drawn to and excited by writing real characters, and making sure their actions and motivations rang true. That really is the challenge in any sort of writing. Honestly, anyone can write some fuck and suck scene. If I'm going to bother with writing at all, I really prefer to think a story and its characters through and make sure I'm writing scenes and motivations and character histories that are genuine. And I found a core of readers that were very appreciative of that realism and genuineness.

I guess I did try to make my characters real or realistic but also dove into the sexual part pretty quickly in the one story I did write. I have added a chapter already. We'll see if that is accepted. I read a story recently that was considered hot and it was two pages. The first page was all about the persons life etc and I didn't make it to the second page partly because it was late and I was tired. I will have to go back and see what happened on page 2. I have read some of Ann Rice's novels and found them to be fascinating and engaging. It's just hard for me to read anything online for long lengths of time. I will have to start printing these stories out.

I was the opposite BonnieBrea I was impatient with the details surrounding the sexual acts verses actually writing about the sexual acts. I do believe that there takes a certain kind of finesse to write a good "fuck and suck" scene. I mean to me that's when the details do count.
