Maybe you can help me out. I'm writing a story and am using an anesthesiologist. Does anyone know about the length of schooling needed? Also, any info on an internship would help also. It's a key part of my story.

Thank you for any help you can give.
With respect

An anesthesiologist is a doctor, MD, so they must attend the same schools and complete the same internship and residency requirements as any other doctor.

An MD in most states must complete and pass 4 years of medical school after their undergraduate schooling (4 years of college). Then depending on the state, a year of internship then a 4 year residency program. Then they are doctors.

Some state have a 5 year residency requirement, but no internship, the first year of residency is considered the intern year.

Some continue on into fellowship programs, but it is not required.

Of course they all must pass their board certifications after their residency.

Hope that helps.

Anaesthetist

Wiki gives a detailed run down. Requirements to become one in some countries are significantly tougher than in the USA.

It was of great help. Thank you! Just have to change a few dates and won't take a pounding from the commentors.
Thanks again

Thanks, Ishtat and fuckwaffle. I noted the issue when I copy edited the story, and suggested getting it clarified and correct, because commentators like y'all would jump all over any factual errors. And DG Hear, MFG, has a great story in the works, a Nude Day entry.

You can also learn a lot by watching Grey's Anatomy. ;) But, knowing doctors, other than your personal physician helps a lot too. And then there is the internet. :D

As has been said, anesthesiologists are fully-trained specialist doctors, albeit often aided by graduate nurse anesthetists.

A common fallacy is that anesthesia is the poor relation of surgery. The contrary is true, pre-op, during the op and post-op, the anesthiologist is the most critical player in the game. He/she is at least the equal of the leading surgeon during an operation.

Surgeons do their thing, anesthesiologists keep you alive while he's playing House or Gray's Anatomy with your body. Just more low-key and under the radar.

PS: Unless they fail!!

Yup. Last I heard, anesthesiologists had some of the highest malpractice premiums in medicine - not because they're incompetent, just because it's so easy for things to go wrong.

(All the fictional kidnappers who can reliably knock people out with no lasting ill-effects should really be going into medicine and making their fortunes!)
