"You're Not Special" graduation speech

I like Chris Rock's attitude. You graduated HS? BFD. It's what you're supposed to do. A hs school diploma is equivalent to an 8th grade education in the agrarian days of yore.

Did you read the entire article, especially the last line?

'But near the end of the address he says, "The sweetest joys of life, then, come only with the recognition that you're not special. Because everyone is."'

Yes! Have you ever seen one of those tests to graduate from 8th grade? I chuckled at how hard it was.

Kind of negates anything he said.

Only because they would have hung him dry for wraping up with

"You are not a beautiful and unique snow flake, you are the same decaying organic matter as everything else! We are all part of the same compost heap. You are not your bank account, you are not your grande latte, you are not the car you drive! YOU ARE NOT YOUR FUCKING KHAKI'S!!!!......

We are the all singing all dancing crap of the world."

Ummm...no. Just as my response said, this is exactly what they need to hear. In fact kids need to be raised up thinking not everything they do is special.

Sorry. I thought you were annoyed at the article. Your original post read that way to me... that you were being sarcastic. For what it's worth, I agree with you.

I would love to have the whole of society start realizing again that you only get what you work very hard and competently to earn.

We're all unique miracles. Probably the only entities in the entire universe to be conscious of the fact that there even is a universe. That's pretty special.

"Each of us
A cell of awareness
Imperfect and incomplete
Genetic blends
With uncertain ends
On a fortune hunt that's far too fleet..."

One of my Grad school profs told us to remember the words from Car Wash Blues; "to the fact that I was genius, the man say, "we got all that we can use".

With regard to kids just outta school, he was dead on.

My daughter graduated today but no deep speeches. Standard small school stuff. The program did list what all the kids were doing afterwards such as what college or if they were going into the military or straight to work. That was fun to see.
Only three had the military listed and all three were boys. I found that disappointing but what ya gonna do?
Only about 15 honors graduates, too. Also disappointing.
Valedictorian speech was ok. Salutatorian was awful. Commencement address was eh.
Still, one down three to go. Getting there slowly but surely.

You are so fucking delusional it's not even funny, either that or you don't have the slightest concept of how truly insignificant our galaxy is much less earth and the human race. How arrogant and self centered you are to think that out of the trillions and trillions of planetary bodies out there, not to mention how young our species is you assume that we are the pinnacle of creation....we can barely see out of our own solar system you twit...

Except that's not actually true...

Yea....you are so right, you can't go out and start a business and make it work like millions of others do every day. Pfffft..***** is to unfair for anyone to do that!

I have as good an idea of the immense size of the universe as anyone else. Sure, some astrophysicists may have a better idea than I do but I know enough to realize its incomprehensibly huge.

That's what makes our awareness of reality all the more amazing. Out of all that nearly infinite endless space, we are most likely very very very much alone. Its mindbogglingly amazing.
