It's handy for professional networking but otherwise useless. You have to be a bit picky about what you join because a good number of the groups are shit but it can be helpful to network with peers without all the normal social networking bullshit.

LinkedIn can be awesomesauce for someone who uses it well, but it definitely lends itself better to some fields than to others. In my field, it allows for access to some really quality information I just don't have time to randomly research for myself. It has also led to some extremely beneficial relationships in which very helpful advice and usable tools and information have been shared. It also allows for passive job and employee search as well as active search. Yes, you can get spammed if you aren't careful re: who you network with, but most of that can be avoided by just being cautious. If you know them IRL or have interacted with them in discussions, they are probably safe bets and possibly advantageous to link to. I love it.
