AND THE BEAT GOES ON. Writerly

Well I would think one would lead to the other. Most authors received their inspiration to write from reading.

At the risk of sounding like an old fart, the kids now don't read. It's I-phones, video games and the net.

Their idea of writing is texting.

The beauty of reading vs watching is, writing (oughta) culls experience of all its irrelevant information and gives the reader all the choice cuts w/o the lips, hooves, and sphincters.

I have grandchildren ranging from 3-20, and what I'm told is, schools pack the curriculum fuller than PILOTS butt on a hot date.

With most schools today, it does not matter whether or not they can read, write or barbeque, the students still get passed on to the next grade level.

It ain't workin' very well is it and hasn't for a long while.

I'm running into illiterate kids here in CA too, who can't read the information on labels in the grocery store.

They can recognise the logos, you bet.

Whats wild is, the tests the kids took this year are the tests they took last year.

Interesting. I was judged incapable of writing and/or reading, back in school in Califiornia. It wasn't that I couldn't read the words, it was that I couldn't see the 'purple passages' or the 'hidden meanings.' The other kids often couldn't read the words, but they could see the 'purple passages' or 'hidden meanings,' once the words were read to them. Maybe the schools need to focus more on teaching students to read the words. If they can't read the words, flunk 'em. JMHO.

Education is like the 2nd oldest profession, and we're still trying to get it right when it comes to teaching kids.

I fault teachers for this reason, most dont know their craft well enough to transfer what they know to other people.
