I'm not even talking about the cracks that are showing up in their marketing approach, or their growth tactics. The problem is that it's going to become the #1 scapegoat for everyone's personal information ending up somewhere they don't want it to be. And people are going to stop using it.

I was in a bar with young urban professionals on Tuesday; they were carrying various mobile devices, yet using the phrase "off the grid" multiple times. They're already thinking about this.

That Big Brother complex they're building in Utah has people spooked. Hell, predictive search engines have people spooked.

There will be no Facebook cars or restaurants. It's not gonna make it that far.

Saw an interesting news item the other day...their aquisition of Instagram was due to the fact that they had inside information on the trend of people liking it due to everyone linking it on facebook.

I'm sure they consider it a calculated risk. But, as an investor, clicks on a "thumbs-up" button wouldn't be enough to convince me.

Honestly - did people really think that facebook wouldn't have to do something like data mining and sale in order to make money?
Could the great unwashed be that stupid?

go to mylife.com and look yourself up.

The shit they put in your public profile there is amazing. While it all my be a matter of public record, it still seems wrong. I imagine that site is a stalkers wet dream.

The vast majority of people aren't even aware that data mining exists. It's like asking are the great unwashed masses so stupid they don't realize that they can, and are, hypnotized on a daily basis. The idea that it's possible is fairly absurd to people so they don't worry about it.

The second you typed your name, age and zip code into that 'see who is searching for you' box, you helped them add to their database.

I did not, I just googled my name and clicked on the profile they have for me. They already had my location, wife, ex wife, parents, and everyones correct location. I know it is all public information that could be found with hours of research...but as I recently moved, I was surprised how up to date it was.

look at you.....adding relevant information to yet another thread. Way to go shorty! Come stand on this step stool and I will pat you on the head!

Here's some relevant info fer ya... You have to sign in to mylife with one of your social network accounts to see the information the have on you. So which one did you use to see all of your info?

well that was almost adding to the thread...too bad you are a idiot!

Make up a name, any name. Then google it followed by MYLife

I used Mike Wise

went straight to his public profile page:

Mike Wise was born in 1955. Mike currently lives in Morton, Illinois. Before that, he lived in Bettendorf, IA from 1985 to 1990. Before that, he lived in Morton, IL from 1990 to 1999. Mike Wise attended Mendota in Mendota, IL and graduated class of 1974.

I think it was Mylife that had the name of an ex-boyfriend linked with me. That actually scared me a little because we're talking 25 years ago and it was someone I dated for a few months yet there it was putting us together. I know it's mostly matching searches that other people do but still.

On CNN, they showcased an application (one of a handful) which calculates how much you're worth to Facebook as a member.

All you do is enter what you're into, what you use on Facebook, etc. etc...

...and I'm sure that info doesn't get sold back to FB. No sir. After all, they call themselves "privacy sites".

This is when having 2 first names comes in handy. No one knows my legal name.

Uh huh. Apology accepted.

This is when having 2 first names comes in handy. No one knows my legal name.

My legal name is very unusual, and has an odd spelling.
The only person, apart from me, who can spell it correctly is my mother.
Even my dad used to get it wrong.

If your name is that fucked up you're probably on official records as several different things. It doesn't matter that nobody knows your legal name's correct spelling, every government or bank employee who's ever handled a peice of paper with your name on it commited it to memory. Having a common name is actually better for annonimity.
