There are plenty of good Marines. I live near Pendleton - I've met them.

But, seriously, what the hell? How many more stories like these are we gonna see? This isn't the media's fault - the Marines are giving them fodder. It's supposed to be "the few, the proud", not "the few proud". Our armed forces shouldn't be a parents' alternative for their juvenile delinquent, or an alternative to jail for a thug. They represent all of us.

My friend David served; he's a stand-up guy. We need more Davids and less vettemans serving our country.

Marines sold stolen combat weapons to gangs, China

By Jeff Black, msnbc.com

American troops sold $2 million worth of weapons and combat gear, including assault rifles and night vision goggles to street gangs and to foreign countries, including China, in a wide-ranging criminal conspiracy uncovered by a Navy probe, according to military officials.

A two-year undercover investigation has implicated more than 60 individuals, an official with the Navy Criminal Navy Investigative Service (NCIS) told The Daily News in Jacksonville, N.C. Many of those involved were stationed at Camp Lejeune, a sprawling coastal Marine Corps installation that is home to special operations and expeditionary forces.

Some of the equipment was sold over eBay and Craigslist, though weapons and ammunition were also sold at yard sales, and in secretive face-to-face meetings, according to the paper.

The Navy probe eventually spilled into other military branches, including the Army and Air Force.

In all, $1.8 million worth of equipment has been recovered as a result of the investigation. Officials said that in addition to the assault rifles and night vision goggles, $800 flashlights were recovered as a result of the probe.

“We’re talking about sophisticated, high-tech flashlights that cost the government up to $800 per unit. The temptation and ease with which to steal and sell them, for some, is irresistible,” an unnamed military official told Stars & Stripes, which confirmed the report.

So far, 47 service members and 21 civilians have been charged. About half of those have been to trial with many pleading guilty to the offenses, Ed Buice, a NCIS spokesman, told The Daily News.

Two Marines have been convicted in the case, The Daily News reported.

Sgt. Daniel Adam Reich who was convicted on Monday of selling and attempting to sell military property as well as conspiracy. He was sentenced to 40 months in prison and given a dishonorable discharge.

Capt. Donald E. Pump Jr. last week was convicted of attempting to sell military property and for conspiracy. He was dismissed from the Marine Corps and sentenced to 18 months in prison.

That's partially because former soldiers, airmen and sailors are all ex-military and only ex-marines are ex-marines specifically. There is a certain amount of persecution. Which is not to say that our eighteen to thirty year olds without parental supervision and large sums of disposable income don't do all sorts of stupid shit.

True. But the knuckleheads in the Marines have made national/international news far more often throughout the last decade plus.

Get a fucking job.

Well go fight two wars in ten years and see how well you come out. I'm not trying to make excuses for them but again no one understands so why do I bother.

Oh for christ's sake...

I'm not trying to make excuses for them

Yes you are.

It's not hard to avoid jail, avoid hitting your wife, avoid being a criminal. I don't care what your trauma is. Self-control isn't a fucking mythical beast - plenty of soldiers and ex-soldiers have it.

Wait... so are you not allowed to sell your own shit? I don't understand...

You're right there is no excuse for what they did. But if you start to assume Marines are all like this then that's too bad.

Are you saying there is no such thing as PTSD or TBI? All the mental health issues many of our troops are having is just crap?

Everybody steals a bit from their employer...its the americun way.

You ever cheat just a little on your taxes?

I know people with those who don't break the law.

Yeah - you're creating a character. You can't be this dumb.

4/10.

See, I was more expressing my distaste for Sean R's posts than talking to the SF.org guy.

Yeah, the problem with that is, if you quote their garbage, we can see it even if they're on Ignore.

Plus, if you have issue with Sean R's post, you should quote it and deal with it head-on. That's the polite thing to do.
