Died of cancer today.

Paul's Botique will always be one of my favorite albums. An absolute masterpiece.

Paul's Boutique is a true classic in the mastery of sampling, but my personal fave will always be the bi-coastal stoner-funk laced Check Your Head, followed by a funk-hip-hop n' Buddhism juiced Ill Communication and its instrumental first cousin The In Sound From The Way Out! These three made the perfect five-year-long block party and I still play these joints a few times a month, joyously.

The sad thing about Paul's Boutique is that the Lower East Side neighborhood depicted on the iconic three-fold cover barely looks like that anymore. It's a hipster-saturated wasteland filled with overpriced and overrated bars and clubs, struggling trendy foodie restaurants and just-add-water luxury highrises. The lo-fi, casual creative aesthetic that the Beasties once championed couldn't survive under the inevitable entropy of the hot-area consumerism and next-gen hipster appropriation that fed upon it.

Hello Nasty was good, too. Probably the best send-off to the era of the '90s that they helped shape and somewhat ruled. I enjoyed the fuck out of living then thanks to their music and spirit. Miss it greatly.

:rose: R.I.P., MCA.
