Obama Says The Goal In Afghanistan Is Not To “Eradicate The Taliban”…

The Taliban responded by sending a suicide squad to attack a heavily fortified compound in the heart of Kabul.

(CNSNews.com) — The U.S. goal in Afghanistan “is not to build a country in America’s image, or to eradicate every vestige of the Taliban,” President Obama told Americans Tuesday night in a prime-time address from Bagram Air Base in Kabul.

Hours later, Taliban fighters — reportedly disguised in burqas — attacked a compound housing foreign contractors in Kabul, killing at least seven people. The Taliban said the attack was a response to Obama’s surprise visit.

This was the second major attack in Kabul in less than three weeks, and it demonstrates the Taliban’s continued ability to strike in the heavily guarded capital even at a time of heightened security because of President Obama’s visit, the Associated Press reported.

In his speech on Tuesday, President Obama said eradicating “every vestige of the Taliban” would be too costly. Doing so “would require many more years, many more dollars, and most importantly, many more American lives,” Obama said. “Our goal is to destroy al Qaeda, and we are on a path to do exactly that,” he said.

The president also said his administration is trying to make peace with the Taliban:

“In coordination with the Afghan government, my administration has been in direct discussions with the Taliban,” he said. “We’ve made it clear that they can be a part of this future if they break with al Qaeda, renounce violence and abide by Afghan laws.” He said “many members of the Taliban” are interested in reconciliation.
