New Obama slogan has long ties to Marxism, socialism

By Victor Morton

The Obama campaign apparently didn't look backwards into history when selecting its new campaign slogan, "Forward" — a word with a long and rich association with European Marxism.

Many Communist and radical publications and entities throughout the 19th and 20th centuries had the name "Forward!" or its foreign cognates. Wikipedia has an entire section called "Forward (generic name of socialist publications)."

"The name Forward carries a special meaning in socialist political terminology. It has been frequently used as a name for socialist, communist and other left-wing newspapers and publications," the online encyclopedia explains.

The slogan "Forward!" reflected the conviction of European Marxists and radicals that their movements reflected the march of history, which would move forward past capitalism and into socialism and communism.

The Obama campaign released its new campaign slogan Monday in a 7-minute video. The title card has simply the word "Forward" with the "O" having the familiar Obama logo from 2008. It will be played at rallies this weekend that mark the Obama re-election campaign's official beginning.

There have been at least two radical-left publications named "Vorwaerts" (the German word for "Forward"). One was the daily newspaper of the Social Democratic Party of Germany whose writers included Friedrich Engels and Leon Trotsky. It still publishes as the organ of Germany's SDP, though that party has changed considerably since World War II. Another was the 1844 biweekly reader of the Communist League. Karl Marx, Engels and Mikhail Bakunin are among the names associated with that publication.

East Germany named its Army soccer club ASK Vorwaerts Berlin (later FC Vorwaerts Frankfort).

Vladimir Lenin founded the publication "Vpered" (the Russian word for "forward") in 1905. Soviet propaganda film-maker Dziga Vertov made a documentary whose title is sometimes translated as "Forward, Soviet" (though also and more literally as "Stride, Soviet").

Conservative critics of the Obama administration have noted numerous ties to radicalism and socialists throughout Mr. Obama's history, from his first political campaign being launched from the living room of two former Weather Underground members, to appointing as green jobs czar Van Jones, a self-described communist.

It was also the name (Italian: Avanti) of the Socialist Party daily under Benito Mussolini before he founded the Fascist Party. Yeah, Fascism is far more Socialist than most people realize. So is Nazism. As Hitler himself pointed out,"We are not out to socialize the industries. We are out to socialize the people." That's a paraphrase, but it's thrust of what he actually said. Been a while since I read that particular book.

Mussolini, by the way, once described himself as an "authoritarian communist." No joke. He was mentored by Angelica Balabanoff, a Russian Marxist.

And Goebbels once noted that "We and the Communists are really fighting for the same thing." Of course, that was before Hitler co-opted him into the "let's pretend that we're secretly not so radical" circle.

Anyway, it's not so new. Gary Hart tried this 24 years ago, if I recall correctly. It didn't work for him, though Donna Rice presumably was the main cause of his failure. People's memories are so short.

By the way, care to guess which economists mostly staunchly opposed Hitler: yep, Hayek and von Mises. Yeah, the fight against Statism in all forms is very old indeed and won't end anytime soon.

He's not a Socialist.

I wonder if Wiki will scrub that section.

BUT GEORGE W. BUSH USED THAT WORD!

You know when the panic is setting in.

;) ;) Blame Bush.

Doesn't make sense.

I know the right's panicking over the word-slogan, as they do with anything concerning Obama, but why would they invoke Dubya?

Where do you get this panicking stuff? A slogan is a poor substitute for a message.

We're not the ones who spent four years treating MISSION ACCOMPLISHED like the gaffe of the century.

Workers of the world, unite!!!

It's May Day, for fucks sake.

Translation: just another work day for the Properly Stimulated.

Huh? The right is panicking, according to you. Why'd you use the word panic if that's not what you meant?

I thought a slogan was a slogan. Is this one of those a-picture-is-a-thousand-words kinda thing or are you making a glass of 10% snark for morning breakfast today?

Yeah, I agree, that MISSION ACCOMPLISHED was a big-ass gaffe. Good thing Obama went and actually got it done. Ol' Binny L never knew what hit him!

;);)
