Radio commercials reminding parents to do a sweep of their cars so they don't 'forget' an infant or small child.

Really?

hearing that commercial was a WTF moment for me.

We must be tended to as if we have no brains, nor are capable of making adult choices. Or being parents and having the ability to take care of our young.

The Overlords are slowly taking control of us.

True story -
When my first child was 8 days old, I ventured out shopping for the first time since his birth. I was happily pushing the pram, getting stuff I needed, when I remembered something from a couple of feet back up the aisle.
I left the pram, stepped back and got the item, and completely forgot I had a pram!
I did the rest of my shopping, paid, and got in the car and drove home.
I packed away my shopping, thinking I had forgotten a few things.
I had a cup of coffee, started to straighten up the bedroom, noticed the cot, and HOLYSHITIFORGOTTHEBABY!!!
Raced out to the car, drove back to the shop and double-parked, ran inside in a complete panic.... And there was my son, being coo'd over by the staff, and happy as anything.
The ladies told me they knew I'd be back in a minute, because this happens a LOT more than people think

It happens at least a couple of times every summer here. I can't imagine.

Right about the time my kid was born, there was a story on the news about a man who forgot to drop his new infant off at daycare before work and she ended up dying from the heat in the back of his car.

I spent the 1st 2 months of my daughters life panicked that I would forget her somewhere:eek:

I like to think that I reasonably open-minded about most subjects. But read no further if you're easily offended or touchy, because where kids and babies are concerned I'm an unapologetic, judgemental, dyed-in-the-wool bitch. Any person for whom that commercial was a light-bulb moment needs to voluntarily remove him/herself from that child's life. Period.

Are you as insulted by the implication of such PSAs as I am?

You gotta love it. People hate the government so much that commercials are considered taking over our lives.

The problem is that there are no tests or certs you need to take to become a parent, so yes, there are people stupid enough that they do need to be reminded.

Concerned deeply. Insulted yes. But concerned nonetheless. There are those of humans who are going to appreciate this PSA and heed the warnings. Perhaps children and pets lives will be saved, and that is a good thing. Let us hope so. But oh, the overarching theme of government as parent.

The sad thing is, reminders seem to be needed.
Every year, 5 babies die after being left in hot cars in Australia.

I've seen it happen here, too, WQ. With or without such ads, it still infuriates me. I consider leaving a dog in a car abuse worthy of jail time. We don't want to get into what I consider worthy punishment for leaving a child in a car.

These type of ads, along with the how to be a good parent ads, generally are preaching to the choir. As with most other sermons revolving around subjects of common sense, the ones who should be listening, rarely ever are.

This happens every year in the dallas area. It's the new way to murder kid's get away with it.
people don't forget the dam ice cream but they do the kid.

This is not surprising. We are a society who puts directions on shampoo, warnings on electrical devices to not use while bathing and warning labels on sleeping pills that they may cause drowsiness and to not operate heavy machinery after taking. Not to mention Caution hot on coffee cups. Need I go on?

The American people suffer enormous insults to their intelligence and their liberty, through government action aimed at a minority of the population too dumb to function.

Please explain how a PSA is an insult to liberty.

This actually happened on a base I used to be stationed at. The parents were in a hurry and were splitting up to go different places. Each one took one kid and thought the other parent took the third child, their one year old.

The kid died.

And you're saying little reminders are a bad thing?

Most PSA are about obvious things. Not sure I've ever seen a big PSA campaign that wasn't about something that everyone already knew.
Every one of them says "Hey, don't be a fucking idiot."
I don't have a problem with that because sometimes everyone is a fucking idiot.

I'm suddenly glad the internet wasn't around during the 80's. I can just hear the howls about how "This is your brain, this is your brain on drugs" were destroying American liberty and represented a gross government over reach into our lives that absolutely needed to be stopped.

However an actual overreach like Gitmo or having to submit myself gay romp to get on a plane are viewed as things that are sacred.

Let's look at some PSA's.

Seatbelts save lives. Duh.
Drugs are bad. Duh.
Drunk driving is bad. Duh.
Talk to your kids about sex and drugs. Duh.
Use a condom. Duh.
Domestic violence is bad. Duh.

I see a pattern yet no outrage over them.

It's so weird that people keep suggesting you're a shitty parent.
