I wouldn't have banned her; let her show up and look like a fool.

(But no one's buying "Just because I thought it was cool", dearie...)

MEMPHIS – A high school senior from West Tennessee says she was banned from attending her prom because her dress resembled a Confederate battle flag, WMC-TV in Memphis reported.

"It wasn't done to offend anybody," Texanna Edwards, 18, told the NBC station. "It was done just for the sole fact that I just wanted a rebel flag dress because I thought it was cool."

But officials at Gibson County High School officials in Dyer, Tenn., did not agree with her coolness factor. Principal James Hughes declined comment to WMC.

"He told us y'all [LOL] have to leave because the dress is inappropriate," Edwards said. She said that last year she wore a camouflage dress to the prom without any objection.

She said she doesn't understand why the dress was banned because students in school wear rebel flag shirts, hats and belt buckles.

"I don't see the point of not letting someone in their one and only prom, senior prom. The year they graduate. Doesn't represent anything bad," student Cody Beasley told WMC-TV.

Gibson County Special School District Superintendent Eddie Pruett, however, said a teacher had warned Edwards months ago that the dress might be inappropriate, The Associated Press reported. Pruett said there have been racial tensions at the school in recent years and the high school principal worried the dress could have caused more, according to the AP.

This story includes reporting from WMC-TV's Janice Broach.

The FOX News Radio Facebook page comments are really funny.

Those flags are no more racest then the american, British, or Spanish flags. Guess what folks! There were slaves under those banners too. Btw I am by no means racest, just a student of history.

Well, student, once you learn how to spell "racist" correctly, we'll start taking you seriously.

Hey never said I could spell, I've just spent years looking at both sides of the war and what the flags mean, and its hard to say one flag is a racist symbol and exclude all the other flags in the slave trade. Did you know the great lincolns emancipation proclamation only freed slaves in southern states?

I would have sent her home, too. When I was twelve, some high schoolers showed up wearing KKK costumes for Halloween at school. They were also sent home. School is public. Racism shouldn't be, even if sending such persons to private property does step on the toes of the first amendment.

I understand why she was sent home. It wasn't a racist symbol until the nutjobs in the kkk made it one. That truckstop flag everone knows wasn't even flag that flew in the confederacy. I could see a riot starting over it though. Bet her parents will sue the school.

You do not even try anymore, do you?

Hey never said I could spell

You said you were a student. No student, no matter what their area of study, should be spelling like a 3rd grader as an adult.

No one believes anyone defending the stars and bars is only defending the war history of that flag. They're also (or only) defending the symbol of minority hatred it continues to represent.

You gave that one away when you said the girl is "your hero".

I was in Coeur d'Alene over the weekend and saw a large Chevy flying both the US flag and the confederate flag. Instant reaction was "ignorant moron." The truck was so loud it set off a few car alarms, which while amusing further paraded said ignorance.

Rory by your logic does that mean anyone who is a reenactor hates African ameicans if they play confederate, or Jewish people if they reenact German at a ww2 reenactment? I guess that means at a rev war event all English reenactors hate Americans.

Remy

Oh and the reason I said this girl was my hero is because she had the fucking balls to dress the way she wanted to and be an individual and not some cookie cutter prom queen. Bet she didn't even know people think its a racist symbol. They don't teach that shit in school no more.

If someone enjoyed re-enacting John Wayne Gacy's life, I'd sure as hell think twice about letting him around my 17-year-old son. That's for sure.

Bet she didn't even know people think its a racist symbol. They don't teach that shit in school no more.

Obviously...

oh man

Sssshhhhhhhh....the group that finds this racist is not educated enough to know that.

Heaven forbid someone show up con un "viva la raza unida" dress.
I enjoyed watching some Peruvians get a chuckle looking at that "ghetto proms" email visual that was popular some years back.

To each his or her own.

Perhaps she can keep it for a KA formal in college?

I saw this story a couple days ago. She makes me think of the General Lee from The Dukes of Hazard.

There's actually no such thing as "racism" in the first place. Its a made up term with no actual definition. There is racial discrimination, racially motivated behavior, etc. "Racism" on the other hand is vague and useless as a meaningful word.

No it didn't. It took a Constitutional amendment to do that.

No I don't.

Yes, you do. The Emancipation Proclamation freed slaves in the southern states but did not abolish slavery. It did not take a constitutional amendment to put the Proclamation into effect, it was an executive order.

And I'm sure you'll be able to show me where in The Constitution the executive branch can make laws.

If this was the case why would we even need Congress.
