The BDSM Book Club Discussion Thread

One Dark Night by Jaid Black

Did you like the book overall or not?

Yes

Do you feel it portrays BDSM in a real way, a positive way and/or your way?

As is typical of Jaid Blacks books it had kinky sex, but wasn't particularly anything to do with BDSM.

Did you like the sex scenes in the book?

Yeah. Not the best she's done, but not the worst.

Did you like the rest of the book, the story in it?

Yes, I like books that combine kink with mysteries.

Would you be interested in reading another book by this author?

Yes, but I've read quite a bit by her.

What did you like best about this selection?

That it wasn't weird like some of Jaid Blacks books can be.

What did you like the least?

I can't think of anything I didn't like.

How would you have changed the story?

I can't think of anything.

Thanks for posting this!

There ARE times I think about stopping so I do appreciate hearing from you.
I do get discouraged and feel alone here a good bit. Btw, I also run a BDSM BOTM at Fet in the The Kinky Intellectual's Book Club. Also a Nilla BOTM Club we rotate genres.

I just wanted to say that I appreciate this thread. My life is too crazy right now for me to join in but I do foresee a time in the future where life will enable me to read more.

Whenever I see someone mention a book on Fet I come over here to see if you'all have reviewed it. I value your opinions.

Keep it up. Thank you

Thanks for posting! The first chapter of this book seemed oh so formula but I really enjoyed the D/s relationship that developed between the two lead characters as well as some of the funny, but right there touching my kink, conversations. Glad we both enjoyed this selection!

I also read the Lora Leigh book but it's been awhile, so I need to reread it before I can review it.

But, honestly, Jaid Black is normally a good choice for involving me. She's not my favorite author, but I can't think of anything she wrote that I disliked. lol I think that I liked this one better than some of hers, story line wise, for the story line, but she's written others that had more of a rawr factor.

I'm glad you don't. I love this thread, even if I don't post often. I'm sorry if having it stickied caused it to get ignored.

Thanks Beautiful Graceanne!

I don't know if being stickied causes the thread to get ignored or not. Some people do ignore stickies but some see them.

I've got some stickied BOTM threads in my fet group, The Kinky Intellectual's Book Club but they are mostly "book keeping threads", the monthly threads I keep "live" and bumping to the first page. I get a bit more participation there but still not that much. *shrug*

I am reading Warrior's Woman by Johanna Lindsey now. I am not usually into science fiction but I am enjoying the idea of: breaching, sex clinics, and claimed women. I think I laughed at the clinical 'breaching' of women by surgical intervention, and forced matching. I am still in the middle of the story, but I guess she will eventually love this warrior that defeated her and live happy ever after (?). Don't tell me!

I now have a nook, and I am surprised at the speed that I burn through stories. I like it because I can read in bed with the light off! It is easy on my eyes. :rose:

Hi everyone!

Ok I just found this thread!! ridiculous as I have visited this site like everyday!

I am a voracious reader. I have pretty much read all the books in the last couple of pages mentioned. I'm not sure of the rules. So I might lurk a bit before posting.

Happy reading!

Great! Happy to have you join us! If you've ever read any of our previous selections or would like to vote on our next one, chime in at any time.

Warrior's Woman by Johanna Lindsey

I liked the story and two worlds, cultures coming together through service and love, by force and surrender! I liked the sci-fi parts that described the worlds and customs. I thought it was funny and imaginative: test tube babies, pleasure-bots for sex sharing, solar baths, medi-techs, etc. The sex scenes didn't seem so hot to me, but it is a cute easy romance. The fact that the Warrior was big, strong and defeated Tedra is enough to make it hot for me.

I haven't read any other books by this author. I am not really into romance novels because they all seem to end happy ever after. There is nothing wrong with happy-ever-after, but they always leave me feeling: infected with delusional thoughts of the impossible. I am not sure if that makes any sense at all.

Makes sense to me. Glad you enjoyed this selection even though you don't typically like romances. Thanks so much for joining us!

Warrior's Woman by Johanna Lindsey was our March 2012 BOTM

Murder Game by Christine Feehan is our April 2012 BOTM.

Surrender to Me by Shayla Black is our May 2012 BOTM

Voting can begin on our June 2012 BOTM now.

Nominations are always open.

The nominations so far are:

I'd like to make a decision on our next BOTM (June 2012) this week. I was going to make Surrender to Fire by Lora Leigh our next book but my library doesn't have it yet. Also I don't want to spend the money nor should I according to my budget on a new book.

Anyone have any other ideas or noms? I've added one. The two I can get from my library are Obsession and Surrender to Me.

The list of noms so far:

1.) Obsession : an erotic tale by Vanderbilt, Gloria

Publisher Summary 2 New York social maven Priscilla Bingham discovers a hidden cache of letters that reveal her late husband's affair with a sophisticated dominatrix who has recorded the intimate details of their relationship, a finding with which Priscilla becomes increasingly obsessed. Publisher Summary 3
The marriages of desire . . .

From the multitalented and versatile Gloria Vanderbilt comes a passionate, sensual, witty, and puzzling tale of erotic obsession, beauty, and revenge, told in tandem by two women obsessed with the same man—and, ultimately, with each other.

Talbot Bingham is a renowned architectural genius who, with his formidable wife, Priscilla, creates an architectural community. When he dies unexpectedly in the middle of their tenth wedding anniversary celebration, the devastated Priscilla is left keeper of the flame of Talbot's genius. Going through her husband's archives, she comes unexpectedly upon a pile of neatly tied letters, and the shocking secret of her husband's intimate life—a discovery that shatters the foundation of her soul and spirit.

Obsession explores the mysteries of the human heart and the nature of sexuality and obsession, provoking questions about whom we choose to love, and why. The reader is left to decide if the other woman represents another facet of Priscilla, or if Priscilla her-self has invented the other woman who completed the world her husband so recently inhabited?

5.) Menage by Emma Holly

Bookstore owner Kate comes home from work one day to find her two flatmates in bed...together. Joe - a sensitive composer - is mortified. Sean - an irrepressible bad boy - asks her to join in. Kate's been fantasising about her hunky new houseshares since they moved in, but she was convinced they were both gay.

Realising that pleasure is a multi-faceted thing, she sets her cares aside and embarks on a menage a trois with the wild duo. Kate wants nothing more than to keep both her admirers happy, but inevitably things become complicated, especially at work.

Kate has told her colleagues that Joe and Sean are gay but the gossip begins when she's caught in a clinch with one of them in her lunch hour! To add to this, one of Kate's more conservative suitors is showing interest again, but she's hooked on the different kind of loving that she enjoys with her boys - even though she knows it cannot last. Or can it?

3.) Symphony of C, Vol I and Symphony of C, Vol II by Cara Mitchell ebook format

From author's web site:

Following the ebbs and flows of longing warring with jubilation, Cara relives the fury of the battle between her intrinsic nature and the teachings of modern society in her quest to fulfill her yearning to yield control to another. Trained by the mysteriously exclusive ranks of high protocol dominants, she endeavours to be moulded into a gracefully captivated being.

Will her journey through intense bliss and wrenching turmoil in order to fulfill her need to obey destroy or lead to unparalleled freedom?

4.) Surrender to Fire by Lora Leigh

SurrenderBook 1 in the Bound Hearts seriesCole has wanted Tess for years. And he's warned her of this several times. He's also warned her HOW he wants her. Tied down in his bed, under his domination, surrendering to his desires. . . Fyre Brand She holds the elemental power of fire within her grasp, able to sear, to destroy. But her heart holds the fear of repeating her ancestors' mistakes. Now, amid a world fighting to rebuild, Carmella must learn that she cannot control the power surging through her fragile body alone. She'll need help. But can she accept the future her leader Torren has seen, and the touch of a stranger who is more than he seems? Publisher's Note: Previously available in the Elemental Desires anthology.

By G. Crider "loves to read" I purchased because of Surrender,(#1 of Heart Bounds Series). Not much of a story but the sex is super hot. It's Cole & Tess's story. Fyre Brand is a paranormal, full of good raunchy sex. If you are looking for more from this book don't. Just a good naughty read and a few fun ideas.

5.) The Dom's Dungeon by Cherise Sinclair

Foster child. Teenage whore. Now a veterinarian, MacKensie's turned her life around, but the scars remain. She saves her affection for the animals who never judge or scorn her, but it's time to get out, move on from her past in Iowa. So, she arranges a vacation exchange to job hunt in Seattle.

Although the house is lovely, one room is locked. Her years in foster care have given her two 'gifts': a neurosis about locked doors and the ability to open them. After she gets into the room, she's appalled...and intrigued. Chains and manacles, whips and paddles, odd benches with straps...

When Alex returns home days early and finds MacKensie draped over the spanking bench in his locked dungeon, he's furious. But her wariness arouses his protective nature and curiosity, so he strikes a deal to keep her close--she'll act as his submissive in exchange for a place to stay and help finding a job.

He'd planned to use the veterinarian to deter an ex-girlfriend, not replace her, but with MacKensie's compelling mixture of strength and vulnerability, the little sub slides right into his well-defended heart.

By Fan

I have read all of Cherise Sinclair's books and have to say, as much as I love the Shadowlands series, this is probably my favorite of all of hers....It was all about the mental aspects of BDSM and the learning and communicating and I thought it was a perfect introduction too to some of her other books. If you are interested and want to "try" one out, this is a great book for that, but I also just loved it regardless!

6.) Eager to Please by Kim Corum

Eager to Please, a new BDSM lite novel from Kim Corum. Here I am, take me, use me. Do whatever you like. When Kara, the wife of a wealthy businessman, is kidnapped, the last thing she expects is to feel sympathy for her captor. As her time in confinement extends, she finds herself involved sexually and playing games of submission and dominance. As each day passes, she slowly begins to fall in love and loses the homesickness she initially felt. Oddly enough, the only person she misses is her butler.

By Sydney

I am probably biased towards this book, given the fact that the whole "falling in love with kidnapper" scenario has long been one of my personal favorite sexual fantasies! I was aware that this was the plot line before I purchased the book, so I was extremely excited to start reading it. And it definitely did not disappoint.

It's basically a love story, with some good old fashioned male dominance and female submission thrown in. Super hot. My favorite aspect of the book was how the two characters really cared for each other. The emotional involvement just made the sex all the more hot and intense.

Romantic bdsm has recently become one of my favorite genres, and I would say this one is at the very top of my list...even better than Breaking the Girl. I only hope Kim Corum writes more of this type. My only complaint is that this one isn't longer.

7.) Surrender to Me by Shayla Black

A secret fantasy.

Hunter had everything until a bullet put his career as a Navy SEAL on hold. Restless and in need of distraction, he accepts an intriguing proposition. Restless and uncertain about his future, he accepts an intriguing proposition: share an acquaintance's girlfriend and fulfill her fantasy of a ménage. It should have been just a night of sexual adventure between three consenting adults. But Kata is like no other girl Hunter has ever met. By turns audacious and sexy, then vulnerable and aloof, she's a heartbreaker he's determined to master. But he needs more than one night. And he wants to do it alone.

An uncontrollable obsession.
Kata never expected to leave her comfortable relationship and explore something so dangerously forbidden with a stranger. Hard as she tries to resist, the guilty pleasure overwhelms her, and she surrenders herself, inch by inch, to the hardcore man who wants her for himself. Consumed by blazing desire, they're soon threatened by the shadows of the past. And now to keep Kata safe, Hunter makes her a bold proposition of his own. Saying yes will destroy her heart. But saying no could cost Kata her life.

We still need votes and noms for our next BOTM.

Surrender to Me by Shayla Black is our May 2012 BOTM

Also we can begin the discussion of Murder Game by Christine Feehan, our April 2012 BOTM.

Murder Game by Christine Feehan

Did you like the book overall or not?

Yes

Do you feel it portrays BDSM in a real way, a positive way and/or your way?

Well, it wasn't out and out a BDSM book, with the titles and stuff, but there was definitely a consensual power exchange.

Did you like the sex scenes in the book?

Yes.

Did you like the rest of the book, the story in it?

Yes, I enjoyed the mystery behind it of tracking down the 'puppet master' and the justice meted out to the players.

Would you be interested in reading another book by this author?

I've read all of her books.

What did you like best about this selection?

I think that Christine Feehan writes really good submissive women. I don't really enjoy her books where she's trying to put dominant women with dominant men, because then the men are just obnoxious.

What did you like the least?

Some of the mushy, lovey dovey stuff.

How would you have changed the story?

I can't think of anything.

Thanks for the great post Beautiful Graceanne!

I think we both had somewhat similar views on the book.

Murder Game by Christine Feehan

Did you like the book overall or not?

It was better for me than the prior one simply because it had the murder game story line but just okay.

Do you feel it portrays BDSM in a real way, a positive way and/or your way?

No, not at all. I didn't find it very BDSM-y at all.

Did you like the sex scenes in the book?

Not really. What REALLY turned me one was when one killer was raping the mom and daugther, making one who was bound watch and with the full knowledge he was going to kill them both regardless. That did it for me. Yep.

The rest of the sex didn't because it was, as is the romance, too unrealistic. A look, a smell, and they are over the moon. A virgin can have sex over and over but it's no problem. And finally, sex was used to overcome her and his issues in a completely unrealistic way rather than in a healthy somewhat realistic way.

i.e.

"I'm mind stalking the lead killer but he is about to kill me in my mind. I can't get free. Hey! Fingers in my vag! I'm back!" WTF!?!

Also their bodies, faces and even scents were all perfect or nearly so. Gag.

Did you like the rest of the book, the story in it?

Yes. The bits in which people weren't magically or scientifically panting over one another.

Would you be interested in reading another book by this author?

Maybe. If, like this one, it had enough story in it to gloss over the severe lack of realism in the romance parts.

What did you like best about this selection?

The Murder Game and that one horrible scene that made me hot!

What did you like the least?

The romance. All they had to do with that was make it much more D/s, have the principals not be perfect or taste of cinnamon, and the sex not be overwhelming and constant.

How would you have changed the story?

More story and see above comment.

:rose:

I didn't think you'd like it, but that's because of what I said before - I like romance and you like grit. I am pleased you enjoyed the story line, though. The game series is becoming a favorite to me, because of the mystery part. I like books where the lead characters are trying to figure something out. It's probably why I read so much Jayne Ann Krentz.

You KNOW me!

*hugs*

Yes. I found it very readable despite the crazy romance that was way over the top.

However, our book this month hits me much closer to right, romance and D/s wise. Not perfect but closer to the fantasy of the D/s dynamic I hold in my heart.

Murder Game by Christine Feehan

I liked the Murder Game story for the science fiction aspect of mutation, alteration, genetic breeding. It was like being able to finally read about Rogue from X Men fucking.

I thought the lovers ability to talk to each other in their minds hot in a way. I liked the way he was possessive with touching her, and there were a few hot sentences about that. The idea that he would be the only man that could touch her without serious health side effects turned me on. The hotness factor was decreased by the poor transition between mystery and sex scenes, but I am not complaining.

Thanks for you post Sweepthefloor. I'm so glad you read along with us and enjoyed this book!

7.) At Grave's End by Jeaniene Frost

It should be the best time of half-vampire Cat Crawfield's life. With her undead lover Bones at her side, she's successfully protected mortals from the rogue undead. But though Cat's worn disguise after disguise to keep her true identity a secret from the brazen bloodsuckers, her cover's finally been blown, placing her in terrible danger.

As if that wasn't enough, a woman from Bones's past is determined to bury him once and for all. Caught in the crosshairs of a vengeful vamp, yet determined to help Bones stop a lethal magic from being unleashed, Cat's about to learn the true meaning of bad blood. And the tricks she's learned as a special agent won't help her. She will need to fully embrace her vampire instincts in order to save herself—and Bones—from a fate worse than the grave.

8.) Divine Misdemeanors by Laurell K. Hamilton

You may know me best as Meredith Nic Essus, princess of faerie. Or perhaps as Merry Gentry, Los Angeles private eye. In the fey and mortal realms alike, my life is the stuff of royal intrigue and celebrity drama. Among my own, I have confronted horrendous enemies, endured my noble kin’s treachery and malevolence, and honored my duty to conceive a royal heir—all for the right to claim the throne. But I turned my back on court and crown, choosing exile in the human world—and in the arms of my beloved Frost and Darkness.

While I may have rejected the monarchy, I cannot abandon my people. Someone is killing the fey, which has left the LAPD baffled and my guardsmen and me deeply disturbed. My kind are not easily captured or killed. At least not by mortals. I must get to the bottom of these horrendous murders, even if that means going up against Gilda, the Fairy Godmother, my rival for fey loyalties in Los Angeles.

But even stranger things are happening. Mortals I once healed with magic are suddenly performing miracles, a shocking phenomenon wreaking havoc on human/faerie relations. Though I am innocent, dark suspicions of banned magical activities swirl around me.

I thought I’d left the blood and politics behind in my own turbulent realm. I had dreamed of an idyllic life in sunny L.A. with my beloved ones beside me. But it becomes time to wake up and realize that evil knows no borders, and that nobody lives forever—even if they’re magical.

9.) Naamah's Kiss by Jacqueline Carey

Once there were great magicians born to the Maghuin Dhonn; the folk of the Brown Bear, the oldest tribe in Alba. But generations ago, the greatest of them all broke a sacred oath sworn in the name of all his people. Now, only small gifts remain to them. Through her lineage, Moirin possesses such gifts - the ability to summon the twilight and conceal herself, and the skill to coax plants to grow.

Moirin has a secret, too. From childhood onward, she senses the presence of unfamiliar gods in her life; the bright lady, and the man with a seedling cupped in his palm. Raised in the wilderness by her reclusive mother, it isn't until she comes of age that Moirin learns how illustrious, if mixed, her heritage is. The great granddaughter of Alais the Wise, child of the Maghuin Donn, and a cousin of the Cruarch of Alba, Moirin learns her father was a D'Angeline priest dedicated to serving Naamah, goddess of desire.

After Moirin undergoes the rites of adulthood, she finds divine acceptance...on the condition that she fulfill an unknown destiny that lies somewhere beyond the ocean. Or perhaps oceans. Beyond Terre d'Ange where she finds her father, in the far reaches of distant Ch'in, Moirin's skills are a true gift when facing the vengeful plans of an ambitious mage, a noble warrior princess desperate to save her father's throne, and the spirit of a celestial dragon.
