Interesting how we cannot use electronic devices during take-off and landing. But this guy uses his phone during take-off, and saw birds hit the engine.

Plane did not crash because of the electronic device. Airlines are full of crap. Secondly, the guy should be procecuted for disobeying the Flight Crew. $10K fine is the max. What should he be made to pay, if anything?

Nothing? No response? There are 2 arguments here:
1. Guy willfully disobeys Flight Crew and uses an electronic device during takeoff
2. Plane did not crash as a result of the electronic device being used during takeoff, so the Airlines are full of crap - let us use our electronic device whenever we want. Doing so will result in happier fliers.

Discuss.

1. Had the flight crew decided to press the issue, then the passenger could have been prosecuted and fined. It's a little bit late now, don'tcha think?

2. The odds of a personal electromagnetic device interfering with electronic avionic systems are highly remote, but there is just enough anecdotal evidence to make airlines err on the side of caution. Nor does the prohibition have to prevent the likelihood of a crash to be justified. Electromagnetic interference that caused the aircraft to go even slightly off course or fly at other than its assigned altitude is a problem that begs for a solution prior to the fact.

Neither is the magnitude of the threat consistent. The likelihood of an undesirable effect of personal devices depends on a variety of factors including total number of devices in use at a given moment, proximity of those devices to the flight deck and changing atmospheric conditions due to weather and periods of higher than normal solar radiation (sun spot activity and solar "winds").

#1 It's not too late. They can still prosecute.

#2. According to the 20/20 report a few years ago, ABC News consultant and veteran airline pilot John J. Nance states categorically: There's little reason to worry about cell phones interfering with an airplane's navigational equipment. Nance says an airplane's electronic systems are "all heavily shielded. That means that stray signals cannot get into those systems."

The Colonel is correct. Everything is shielded for protection however there always is the slightest possibility shit can happen as remote as it may be. Take off and landing is the most critical times of a flight and there is no reason to put everybody at risk. Fact is that planes should not crash but they do due to human error or equipment malfunction. My point here is equipment malfunction. Shielding of the electronics could be worn or not sealed correctly so do not risk it.

I personally feel he should have been arrested. It is my contention that everybody knows the rules and a zero tolerance policy should be enforced no matter who you are. Anybody doing this potentially has put every life on that plane at risk and is an asshole in need of a serious beat down.
Airlines are private companies and may enact rules as they see fit. If you do not like the rules take a cab.

airlines don't generally piss off passengers they just tried to kill.

There was no chance the plane could have crashed unless pilot error existed. That particular plane was designed to take off, land, and fly with one engine out of commission.
