Good to know. My dog has a really, really bad ear infection and I can't afford to take him to the vet. My grandpa keeps going, "Give him some penicillin" so I go to look it up, and turns out they can have penicillin, and so I come in there to give it to him, and my grandpa's like, "I just gave him one, don't give him another one!"

So... had it not been ok for him, it would have already been done. Poor guy is having a really hard time though. I woke up with him pounding, scratching his ear. I'd been cleaning it out with peroxide, but I just can't get rid of it. I don't get how he keeps an ear infection. I know how bad those things hurt. You can hear him yelping over it, and you guys know how lovey-dovey I am with critters anyway- if I'm this bad over an ear infection... Ima have a nervous breakdown if something really bad happens to him.

But yeah, I'm getting ready to give him a bath, and I'm wondering if I should put alcohol in his ears like the internets said, but I JUST put peroxide in them so I'm gonna wait a couple minutes. My grandparents are all pissed about him anyway, because he's an indoor dog, has been his entire life, and they keep wanting to put him outside. Gramps is planning on tieing him on a line tomorrow to get him used to it. But... Sparticus is really, really stupid. Like, he has no idea how to be an outside dog. And their dogs are guard/hunting dogs- if they get into a fight they'll rip my guy apart. All he does is human tricks and roll around screaming like a dumbass. He would be the most useless addition to a pack ever- if he ever had to go wild, he'd die. He has no hunting skills, at all. He doesn't understand that meat comes from animals- he had a fucking pet rabbit. I'm not making that up. I fostered a rabbit for the ASPCA and he claimed it, groomed it, sat with it in his arms, snuggled with it- in the wild, in the outside, he's fucked.

The other dogs will make fun of him. And he'll get off the chain and get lost, like he did when I tried a tie-out in my ex's yard in my brief stint into suburbia. He got lost and I had to drive around looking for him, I eventually found him, and he was freaking out, ran up to me and literally jumped into my arms. If he gets lost here, I might not be able to find him, it's all woods and hills and poisonous water, poisonous plants, angry critters like paint'ers and cyotes and bears and whatnot...

I would be a horrible parent. Overprotective and whatnot.

Please don't medicate your dog without consulting a vet...

Nine times out of ten it will be fine, but for all you know it could be a viral infection(for which anibiotics will do NOTHING positive) or you could be giving a toxic dose.

It's nice to know dogs can take penicillin, but it would be far preferable if they would simply practice 'safe sex' in the first place.

Have a talk with your dog.

This is gonna sound weird, but it works.
My vet is a firm believer in 'natural' therapies before trying other drugs, and he put me onto this for my Dane.

Warm 100ml of virgin olive oil in the microwave (just warm, not hot). Next, finely slice 4 cloves of strong garlic, and mix it into the warm oil.
Leave to macerate overnight and then strain out the garlic.
Suck up about 10ml into a syringe.
Warm the syringe full to body temp (I used to put it under my armpit for a couple of mins) and then drip into the dog's ear, making sure to massage gently so it goes all the way in.
Do this twice a day till the infection clears - my dog took 4 days.

That's how the need for penicillin began.

(S)He she should stay away from the poor thing.

Antibiotics function more or less the same way in all mammals. The penicillin is likely the very same as it is in primates. Other drugs can be a very serious problem. You can always call a vet and tell them you can't afford their services and ask questions. There are also people who post here who know a whole lot about veterinary medicine who might be able to help you out. You'd do well to be in touch with dolf or stoned_fox about it. They both have a lot of experience.

Believe me, if I could, I would. I already feel like shit about it.

I knew a girl who was pregnant when her dog go sick. The Vet diagnosed the dog with an infection and perscribed an antibiotic for the dog. The next day she was feeling ill so she went to her Dr and she had an infection and was given the same medicine and dosage. That was 11 years ago and I still tease her about it.

If you can't afford a visit to the Vet every so often then you can't afford to keep a pet. If you must keep him then put away $5 a week or so until you have enough to cover a vet bill or two.

He should be going at least once a year for check-ups and shots anyway.

That's the homeopathic cure for head lice...

He has already admitted to turning his cat into a feral mooch...

:nods:

Ask Blunt_trama (dolf) about dogs, kittens and the proper shoes...

I know- when I first got him, I not only had vet money, I took him to a groomer, I went to PetSmart and let him pick out toys- dog parks and puppy sweaters... God, my life has changed so much... If you had told me in say, January, that I would be living like this now, I would never have believed you.

This is why-well, one of many reasons- that I am so fucking depressed all the time.

WQ is right about the garlic thing:
Garlic, also known as Allium sativum, has been used for its medicinal properties. In ancient times, Greek athletes consumed garlic to improve their strength and in World War II it was used as an anti-microbial agent to disinfect wounds
.

its a natural antiseptic and so inhibits infection, and a natural broad spectrum antibiotic to boot!

the warm olive oil should help soothe and dislodge any debris (such as mites/other foreign bodies causing irritation) and use raw garlic to steep in the oil before draining since you'll be destroying its allicin by cooking it first.
