Thomas Kinkade, popular artist, dies at age 54

(CNN) -- Thomas Kinkade, one of the most popular artists in America, has died at his California home, his family said.
He was 54.

"Thom provided a wonderful life for his family,'' his wife, Nanette, said in a statement late Friday night. "We are shocked and saddened by his death.''
His death at his Los Gatos home appeared to be from natural causes, according to the family. More details will be released in the days ahead.

Art from the self-described "painter of light" adorns many living rooms in America. It emphasizes simple pleasures and warm, positive images of idyllic cottages, lighthouses and colorful gardens.

"My mission as an artist is to capture those special moments in life adorned with beauty and light," Kinkade said in a message on his website. "I work to create images that project a serene simplicity that can be appreciated and enjoyed by everyone. That's what I mean by sharing the light."

Kinkade was also an author, and his top sellers included "Masterworks of Light" and "The Artist's Guide to Sketching."

He painted more than 1,000 pieces on various topics, including cabins, nature scenes, seascapes and classic Americana.

I thought you had white walls and no art?

And that is very sad about Kinkade.

R.I.P. :rose:

I have his perpetual plate calender, his lighthouse collection and a few other pieces.

The liberals will definitely be having a party. They hate any art that you can actually tell what the hell its supposed to be. The uglier the better. From what I know, Kinkade was a heretic to the cause of artistic culture distortion and destruction.

I never cared for Kinkade's style of painting.

I like wildlife art- Owen Gromme is a favorite.

Ugly paintings, and apparently a singularly crappy human being.

Very sad for his family.

His pictures were sort of creepy.

I don't think all his paintings were ugly. I think he was overrated by himself and his fans but some of his paintings did have a nice feel to them. He knew what people liked to look at and while that doesn't make a good artist it does make a successful one.
And he was indeed a real shithead. You'd be hard pressed to find anything nice said about him as a person.

streams are alright, but that was like a bad trip with the happy trees guy.

Now there was an artist.
I saw a show about him once. He was apparently a perfectionist and what we saw on tv was the result of hours and hours of practice and his on air "mistakes" were intentional. He also hated his hair but knew it was his trademark so he kept it.

i believe that hair is half the reason why potheads 'round the world watched that show.
