A lot of immigrants come here and they become parents and they don't necessarily have a lot of education, but they still push their kids to succeed and many do. There are also a lot of black kids who come from disadvantaged backgrounds that do well...so it's a subset, not a whole.

I think parents/guardians have to be involved because the teacher can't be there at night telling the kid not to go out and to stay home and study and to reiterate how important it is to study and do well.

There is a lot of truth in this. But I maintain that the answer is to demand that your kids do not settle for less. If you can not read demand that your child learn. Ask them what they are suspose to be doing, communicate with the teachers and see if your child is keeping up and if not don't let it slide.

Demanding isn't really an option beyond a certain point. Let me point out the two biggest problems with this plan. If you can't read how can you confirm your kid is reading when they tell you that they are? I mean if I can claim that 's't'o'p' spells moon who the fuck are you to challenge me? Worse kids who are well read usually have well read parents who read to them as a child and taught them to read. My point about uneducated parents wasn't that they don't value education. My point is that they are useless in helping their child gain one. In the same way that parents who don't invest in the stock market are going to lack the knowledge to teach their children how to do so for their retirement. Expecting the children to get smarter on their own is asking a lot.

At the same time what would you ask your kid's teacher to make sure they are "meeting demands"? Is a passing grade okay. How bout B's. Do they need to be honor roll? Top of the class? What criteria are we talking about? Some like "he's passing his classes and will graduate don't mean much of anything if you're trying to break out of poverty and others like is he the top of his class well are so unrealistic that I refer you back to my "there's ice on everest. However if you're going to tell me that the only way I can keep my foot from rotting is to hike up there and get some that since you have a freezer you're not teaching me personal responibility. You're being an ass." reference. The top of the class especially if you're talking about number 1 is a fairly unatainable goal today. In my graduating class it didn't come down to grades. It didn't even come down to extra ciriculars. It came down to attendence. My valedictorian won because his five rivals all had an absense during their four years of high school. Turns out breaking your leg snowboarding is the difference between being rewarded for your hard work and being an also ran. Hell even when you count honor roll we only had nine top honors. Which sounds like a lot. Until you find out that due to how many attend my High School 9 Honor roll students mean you have to be in the top .9. When you've gotten so elite that being in the 1% isn't enough you need to fix something.

(Reuters) — An internal NBC News probe has determined a “seasoned” producer was to blame for a misleading clip of a 911 call that the network broadcast during its coverage of the Trayvon Martin shooting, according to two sources at the network.

NBC News brass interviewed more than half a dozen staffers during its investigation of the misleadingly edited 911 call placed by George Zimmerman just before he shot the unarmed Florida teenager, said the sources, one of whom is an executive at the network.

The clip aired on the network’s flagship “Today” morning show last week.

The edit made it appear that Zimmerman immediately told police that Martin was black, when, in fact, the full tape reveals that the neighborhood watch captain only did so when responding to a question posed by a dispatcher.

There was no clear indication on Thursday of what, if any, disciplinary actions would be taken against the producer or other staff involved in the incident.

The sources at the network, who declined to identify the producer, said NBC News executives did not know the 911 call was misleadingly edited until news reports surfaced days later on right-leaning blogs including Newsbusters.org and Breitbart.com.

BRIDGETOWN (AFP) — UN rights chief Navi Pillay on Thursday called for an “immediate investigation” into the circumstances surrounding the February death of an unarmed black US teen, shot by a neighborhood watchman.

Pillay made the comments about the controversial Trayvon Martin case at a press conference in Barbados, as she wrapped up a three-day visit to the Caribbean island nation.

“As High Commissioner for Human Rights, I call for an immediate investigation,” Pillay told reporters.

“Justice must be done for the victim. It’s not just this individual case. It calls into question the delivery of justice in all situations like this.”

Neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman, a white Hispanic, fatally shot 17-year-old Martin inside a gated community in the Florida town of Sanford on February 26.

Zimmerman has said he acted in self-defense after Martin punched him in the nose, knocked him down and slammed his head into the ground.

The case has unleashed a national uproar over race relations and the right to self-defense in the United States.

Pillay expressed shock that Zimmerman was not arrested right away, and expressed concern about Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” law, which allows the use of deadly force in situations where there is a belief of a threat.
