It's been out since early March.

Some are claiming that the ending is sort of blah. And yeah, I agree. But the journey is totally worth it anyway IMO.

Not gonna post spoilers, but suffice to say there's a lot of fan rage on the intrawebs.

Kinda blah?

at the end I was given a turd sandwich and given my choice of three toppings..three identical toppings

it invalidated everything that happened in all 3 games... it's the worst fucking writing that I've seen anywhere

Bioware should be apologizing

I heard chatter that they were thinking of changing the ending

I hear chatter that Bioware is engaged in epic trolling. Play it just right and there are hints that the ending was just a mind fuck and that itll be resolved in DLC. Hopefully not for-pay DLC but you know, that's business.

It's just a plan to get you to buy the DLC much like Fallout Vegas. These games are just giant money sucking leeches now.

All of the endings sucked but my issue was that it only had on freaking sex scene.

in Dragons Age, I could sex up almost all of them in the camp, that is the whole reason I played through all of the endings.

I didn't even have that motivation with ME3.

And why isn't James a sexable option?

Supposedly, the new content will only "clarify" the existing ending. Non-Bioware sources have suggested that they will be making some sweeping revisions, but the official line is that there will only be "clarification" and they are still hewing quite closely to the "artistic integrity" argument.

Some have expressed a suspicion that Bioware deliberately tanked ME3 so they can try to buy themselves out from EA. That would require a truly stupendous lack of common sense, but then again they claim that the current ending was one they felt everyone would like, so I cannot really say one way or the other which would require more stupidity.

They may be trying to buy some time with the multiplayer DLC. We had Resurgence recently and the news post for this weekend's Operation: Silencer seems to indicate that the Vorcha will be joining the ranks of N7 operatives in accordance with the leaked Rebellion information. We will see how that goes, though I suppose a Turian Infiltrator (assuming they actually meant Turian and are not simply adding another Quarian Infiltrator as they did with the Justicar for the Adepts) could be interesting as well, especially if they are nice and give us Marksman on them... Marksman + Tactical Cloak + Turian Veteran accuracy + Claymore X = true stupidity.

And since I have managed to babble so much, back to the main point; Thane's death did not hit me as badly as it did for others, mostly because he was already doomed thanks to having Kepral's Syndrome. You'd think that the Salarians could just vat-grow new lungs or a cybernetic replacement would be available, but apparently not. The two deaths that hit home for me were Kelly Chambers and Mordin; I made sure to save the entirety of Normandy II's crew in ME2, and was glad to see she was working to help everyone in ME3. She survived the Collectors only for Cerberus to casually gun her down :(

Mordin's death was even worse. He worked so hard to atone for the Genophage, even going so far as to risk exposure by contacting Wrex directly, only to be arbitrarily killed off. At least in the case of Kelly's death, Shepard was not able to do anything, but he (or she, but I play male Shepards) was right there on Tuchanka with no other options.

I accidentally killed Tali once, and that sucked; I read quickly and so often skip through cutscenes, but having the same key used for skipping lines and selecting dialogue resulted in me missing the Paragon dialogue option to argue the Quarians to stand down and get peace between them and the Geth and instead selecting the option that leads to her race being annihilated and her committing suicide.... well. Way to make me feel like a giant jerk, designers.

I have no idea why James is not an option. However, the writers may have had a bit more in mind with his banter on the shuttle deck than really came through; perhaps James is more interested in Cortez than in Shepard?
